In her debut book, Morgan Thorne writes about the art and practice of Classic Discipline, also known as English Discipline.

We begin with a quick lesson on the history of classic discipline so that we can use the past as inspiration for our play. Starting with the naval discipline made famous by the British, we continue on to British school discipline, which was (and sometimes still is) used in various parts of the world to keep students in line. We finish up with ritual and religious discipline, a taboo subject that many find erotic.

Getting into the practical side of BDSM practice begins with exploring different types of consent, negotiation and when a 'safe word' may be needed. The differences between punishments and 'funishments' are examined, with instructions and advice for engaging in both. Morgan is well known for her emphasis on safety and goes into thorough detail on how to stay safe, both in body and mind.

It is then time to learn how to use a variety of implements, including different techniques, where on the body to use them, and how to care for the implement. The book covers canes, floggers, straps, paddles, switches, birches and many other implements that fall into the category of classic discipline.

Morgan has been practising BDSM all her adult life. She got an early introduction to kink through the Queer community in the early 1990's and knew she had found 'her people'. She has also spent nearly a decade working as a Professional Dominant, which has allowed her to expand her skills as both a Top and a Dominant. She enjoys playing with a variety of people of all orientations/genders/identities. BDSM is an integral part of her personal, romantic relationships. Morgan is both asexual and pan-romantic. Prior to her work as a Professional Dominant, Morgan worked in health care. This has allowed her to gain a more thorough understanding of health and safety concerns in kink. She retired due to an injury that lead to chronic pain and disability. It also lead to her interest in medical play, a way to continue to use the skills she learned in health care and to find comfort in the loss of a much loved career. What a brilliant book! Extremely well written, Thorne balances talking about darker kinky acts with levity in her tone and consent at the centre. She also does a wonderful job of not falling down the "one true way" hole some BDSM books do - there's never a moment in this book that treats an element as completely necessary. I found the guides on how to use various impact toys varied, detailed, and informative. I bought the Kindle edition originally, but next pay day I'll be picking up a physical copy too (can you blame me? The cover is gorgeous) so that I may share it with my partner and whip him into shape (hahahaha).

I wouldn't suggest this book as a first foray into BDSM/kink, but it isn't presented as such, so there's no false advertising here. Despite that, there is a good mix of basic groundwork (spending a good amount of time focusing on consent, negotiation, and the basics of safer play areas, proper use of toys even down to proper speaking technique) that a newbie may find quite helpful.
