Laced with spare moments of love and joy, this is a memoir of family ties and finding an identity in a heritage that is neither wholly Indigenous or Anglo; of strength and resilience; of indominatable spirit.

This edition of Halfbreed includes a new introduction written by Indigenous (Métis) scholar Dr. Kim Anderson detailing the extraordinary work that Maria has been doing since its original publication 46 years ago, and an afterword by the author looking at what has changed, and also what has not, for Indigenous people in Canada today. Restored are the recently discovered missing pages from the original text of this groundbreaking and significant work.

Native North-American literature is largely ignored and that's a shame. These people and their culture have nearly been wiped out from this world and their (scarce) literature is one of the few testimonies left of what their lives were and what they've been through. Maria Campbell's autobiography is one such testimony and I believe it deserves a lot more attention, in Canada in particular, than it has yet received. This book tells the story of a Metis woman born in 1940 in the province of Saskatchewan. She got a tough life but writes without bitterness, in a simple and honest style that I find quite moving.

I learned of this book from reading some of Margaret Laurence’s writings. Interestingly this author writes of places with which I’m familiar so I found her story compelling. I highly recommend it especially for those from people northern Alberta/Saskatchewan. It provides a historical lesson that I never got in school.
