This is now my 2nd FireCube but I never uploaded a review of my first Cube in late 2019. I hate to admit that I was a former Apple “fanboy”, but I am now without a doubt, fully invested in the Amazon ecosystem and for good reason. This stuff not only just works...it works extremely well! I have now been using “Fire” products since the Summer of 2019 and as a home theater designer and custom integrator going back more than two decades, I am not exaggerating when I say that Amazon Fire and Smart products are by far the most economical and absolute best value in quality media streaming products currently available. If you are PRIME member, using 4K FireSticks should be a no-brainer. And, if you want the absolute BEST FireTV video streaming device, this FireCube is currently the “premium” model to get if you are an Amazon customer.
Before I continute, I would also like to say this... If all you are really looking for is a DIY friendly, extremely easy to use media streaming stick without requiring more elaborate custom automation type features, then this FireCube is really OVERKILL for you. Instead, I would highly recommend you look more at the 4K FireTV Sticks (You have two very good choices in either the 4K or 4K “Max” versions. I would recommend that you NOT get the regular 1080p or economy “Lite” versions of the FireTV Sticks as the two 4K variants are only marginally more expensive and offer much greater overall performance)
Ok, now why did I say all that in the preceeding paragraph? EASY....
The “regular” FireSticks are more of an easier, “plug ‘n play, once and done” solution. They are very compact and offer great functionality and are quality 4K media streaming devices. That is NOT to to say that the FireCUBE I am reviewing here is not also “plug n play”, but the CUBE is geared more towards end-users who are looking for greater home automation type functionality along with more custom Audio/Video Control options including the ability to control third party AV devices which can be kept hidden and out of sight with the use of the Cube’s ability to control external AV devices via the included IR-EMITTER BLASTER Dongle. Couple that with Alexa enabled handsfree voice control and automating some of your AV gear can be taken to another level. However, that type of setup is often simply beyond the abilities of regular end-users to get a handle of and requires a bit more thought and tinkering. I am just trying to be completely honest here when I say that it takes a bit more knowledge to do this well and it can become a very frustrating process for novices who have never tried to tackle controlling multiple pieces of hardware before.
So, I just wanted to get all of the preceeding thoughts out of the way first. Again, if you really just want a “5 minute done and forget about it setup”, then the CUBE is probably not the best choice for you. Look to the two models of 4K FireTV Sticks instead and also save yourselves a bit of money in the process.
Now, on the FireCUBE- which is why you may still be reading this review....
So why is this the “Premium” version of the FireTV streamer?.. Quite simply, it’s the one with the most powerful Main processor (CPU) and Graphics Processor (GPU) of all the Amazon FireTV devices. The “regular” 4K FireTV stick is equipped with a Quad Core CPU running at 1.8Ghz and a GPU running at 650MHz. The CUBE however is a powerhouse in relation to that. The Cube has a HEXA-Core (6 Core) CPU running at 2.2Ghz + 1.9Ghz & GPU running at 800MHz. It also has 2GB of RAM vs. 1.5GB in the “regular” 4K FireStick and it also has double the internal storage at 16GB vs. 8GB (more on that later). While that may not sound like a lot on paper to some of you, it makes an ENORMOUS difference in the overall performance of the Cube. As someone who has used various FireSticks since 2019, I can tell you that you certainly notice the difference in how the Cube performs. Especially in the snappy responsiveness when surfing the Menus and Searching in the GUI.
The Cube also has a beefed up Power Supply with its own separate DC power jack and an Adapter that plugs directly into a wall receptacle. One additional benefit to that is that unlike a FireStick which shares one USB jack for both power and future expanision possibilities, the Cube has a separate USB input jack which you can use for various options such as plugging in the included Hardwired Network Ethernet Adapter or possibly adding your own optional USB Hub which would give you the benefit of being able to connect MULTIPLE USB devices to the Cube at one time... including the Ethernet Adapter, optional USB devices such as Keyboards and Gaming Controllers and Additional Storage in the form of USB Flash Drives!.. Want 32GB, 64GB, 128GB or even more external storage? Well, you will be able to do just that with very minimal effort with your own add-on accessories.
Therefore, the actual amount of already included internal storage is not really an issue as it can still be expanded as I have noted above. However, the Cube does in fact include the MOST standard internal storage of any current FireTV device (that being 16GB vs. 8GB in the “regular” 4K Stick). For most users, that 16GB is more than you may ever need. However if you want to increase that, rest assured, you will not be locked into that.
The Cube also comes with the optional Ethernet adapter if you want to make use of a Hardwired connection instead of a WiFi one. I highly recommend going the hardwired route if you have a line avaialble as it will ensure you are always getting a solid stream with enough bitrate to handle 4K streaming with ease with no buffering issues. You can of course get just as good performance if you have an excellent, stable WiFi network but going hardwired means you will never suffer those occasional dips or lag if your signal happens to drop for whatever reason in the middle of you and your family enjoying an entertainment stream. Just to clarify, “regular” FireTV Stick users can also go hardwired but you need to purchase this adapter from Amazon separately for $19.99. (You already have this adapter as an INCLUDED accessory with your Cube!. I highly recommend you make use of it)
OK, this is already getting really long so I better try to wind this down soon. If you are still with me, I hope I have provided some important info in order to help you make some informed decisions. I will just go through these next thoughts quickly...
4K video streaming quality with the Cube is outstanding! I can confirm that this is the best 4K capable media streaming device I have ever personally used to date and in addition to that, it supports DOLBY VISION HDR and DOLBY ATMOS Audio for those of you who want to take your visual and auditory experience further to the next level.
Integration with Alexa for use with automation and greater third party gear control is excellent and the 2nd Generation Cube includes the refreshed Alexa remote along with the base unit itself having full access to Alexa via complete Handsfree use. But don’t worry! If you are not comfortable something "always listening" you can turn that feature completely off and you will have a visual indication of that with a Red LED on the top of the unit itself.
The updated Cube remote also has four one-touch direct access keys for Prime Video, Amazon Music, Netflix and Disney+. I have to admit, I was a little annoyed when this new version of the remote first appeared, but then I quickly realized that we just happen to use ALL four of these services, so its actually now much more convenient for our household streaming experience.
I could go on forever about all of the Cube’s specific features, but I think the easiest way to try to summarize my whole discussion again is simple.. If you want to have access to the BEST 4K streaming device that Amazon currently makes along with next level automation and control possibilities then the CUBE is quite simply what you want. However, that comes at a bit of price premium. But, if you happen to catch this during a sale, you may see it as low at $99. I feel it’s more that worth it either way. But, if you think you don’t need all of those extra features and just want to be able to enjoy your Prime Video, Netflix, Disney+ and other mainstream applications in stunning 4K without any fuss and save money, just opt for the 4K FireTV STICK instead!
Sorry about another long ramble. If you happened to make it this far and learned something new or found any of this to be benefical, I will make a simple request... Please consider clicking the “Helpful’ button. I will get nothing out of this other than knowing that my long ramble may have helped someone. HAVE A GREAT DAY!
PS: and one last thought (sorry!).. If you want to learn about any expansion possibilites I have mentioned, all you need to do is seek out some videos on YouTube. Its full of info on the Cube’s potential. Among other things, the Cube can also run applications such as KODI and it makes a fantastic Retro-Gaming device! The possibilites for you with this little square-thingy is simply amazing!

Then start watching videos – make sure they are fresh and current – on YouTube all about your FireTVCube. You will learn how to upgrade your 'cube' –– adding external memory, getting a high wired ethernet speed, even plugging in a keyboard.
You will need to buy: UGREEN AC to DC Adapter 5V 2A Power Supply Adapter with 1.35mm x 3.5mm Connector Plug AC if you wish to use SDD or HDD instead of a thumb drive. Note that you cannot use, for example, a 1TB drive because you have to use the FAT file system, and 1TB is too large for that.
Next, you will need - UGREEN USB 3.0 Hub 3 Port with Gigabit Ethernet Network Adapter, USB to RJ45 Lan Adapter Converter for MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Surface Pro, TV Stick, IdeaPad, Nintendo Switch, HDD, USB Flash Drives. This is the part that does all the hard work, providing 3 USB 3 ports and the wired ethernet port. There is also a hole to plug the DC adapter into if you need one.
Next, you will need - 2 Pack OTG Cable Replacement for Fire Stick 4K, Compatible Samsung Galaxy, Amazon Fire TV, Compatible with LG HTC Android Phone Tablet Micro USB Host with Micro USB Power. Yes, it has 2 cables because we all know that the first one will somehow disappear one day down the road. This cable is what you plug into your Cube that provides the place to plug in the USB hub.
And finally, a thumb drive. I just got a 64GB and plugged it into the hub. I got the SanDisk 64GB Ultra Loop USB 3.0 Flash Drive - SDCZ93-064G-G46.
And keep watching those YouTube videos! Many of the videos for the FireTV Stick are also relevant for the FireTV Cube.
If you've never owned a streaming stick it can all seem a bit much when you're first starting out with your FireTV stick or cube, but keep at it. This is important … watch at least 3-5 videos for what you are trying to accomplish with your FireTV. It's tempting to watch 1 and then have at it, but don't do it! Always watch more than 1 video no matter what you are trying to accomplish.
All the equipment, except the 64GB thumb drive and the twin pack of OTG cables is from UGreen. I received no compensation for recommending their products. But a lot of YouTubers use exactly the same setup I'm using, which I learned from watching all those videos. They really help. I'm sure there are no end of Discord and Reddit videos/threads for you to learn from.
To wrap it up: because I watched those videos I was able to order exactly what I needed and ran into no problems at all. If you have a pair of Echo or Echo Dot speakers you can use them for speakers for the stick/cube you bought. There is a video for that too.
I hope this has been helpful to anyone who is looking to get into the top-tier streaming device or even a top-of-the-line FireTV Stick. For all the things I've talked about 10 out of 10, would certainly buy again. Cheers!
