From the manufacturer

Why this model:
The Verilux HappyLight Liberty 10K Energy Lamp provides up to 10,000 LUX* of full spectrum light, the highest recommended output for addressing seasonal change, the 'winter blues' or the effects of shift work, jet lag, malaise or fatigue. Balanced Natural Spectrum illumination taps the potency of light to gently cue your body to recalibrate and stabilize, naturally reducing fatigue and lethargy while improving focus and concentration.
No two people view and react to light in the same way, so this energy lamp provides the flexibility to customize the light to meet your needs. High-Low intensity controls, interchangeable lenses and a tilt feature give you maximum flexibility to design the program that works best for you. A broad field of up to 10,000 LUX* of light provides a more flexible program, allowing you to be farther from the lamp and to move around more freely during use.
When to use it:
For most people, 30 to 60 minutes is a productive, effective light therapy session – generally in the morning. Some may also flip on the light for a while in the afternoon to combat the difficult 'lunch coma'.
Why the light's not too bright:
The Liberty 10K is designed to provide effective, comfortable light therapy. An Optix lens diffuses the light to reduce glare and eye fatigue, and Flicker-Elimination Technology further reduces fatigue and discomfort.
Key Features
- 10,000 LUX of soothing Natural Spectrum illumination
- Two interchangeable, replaceable lenses – High-Energy and Comfort – and two light intensity settings provide four options to tune the light to your needs , comfort and energy level
- Optix lenses reduce glare and eye fatigue
- Wall mountable for convenient, discreet use
- Tilts 15° forward and backward to expand the treatment area
- Compact design for portable, convenient use with no reduction in performance

What is LUX?
LUX is simply a measure of the intensity or brightness of a light at a given distance from its source. The National Institute of Health identified 2,500 to 10,000 LUX as the optimum range for comfortable, effective light therapy.
How it works:
Verilux HappyLights provide broad spectrum light therapy to stimulate all of the eye's photoreceptors: cones, rods and the newly discovered melanopsin. HappyLights offer photopic light (primarily stimulating the cones) and scotopic light (primarily stimulating the rods) to reduce the size of the pupil, relaxing the eye for more comfortable light therapy. Melanopsin helps set the body's daily cycles and is triggered by Natural Spectrum Light. Scientists have demonstrated that bright light therapy can act like daylight to restore balance, mood and energy.

Why it works:
Our bodies take cues from the environment – especially from light. When our schedules are driven by man-made light, it may negatively affect our circadian system. Underexposure to natural light can result in:
The winter blues, Fatigue, Sleeplessness, Lack of focus and concentration.
Energy lamps help the body recalibrate and stabilize by cuing its natural energy enhancers and providing light to replace what’s missing during the winter months.

Starting in my teens, I've found it increasingly difficult to keep a constant sleep schedule going. A long time ago someone had suggested that it might be because of being unable to internally distinguish between night and day based on the environment. Later it became clear that this is referred to as non-24 hour syndrome. I dismissed it right away, as "Well, I can see light, so surely that's enough. I know when it's night or day, so why am I only getting X amount of sleep even though I know what time it is. Plus, anybody can have a bad night or exciting weekend.
In order for me to get a good pattern going, I needed a very consistent schedule. Any throw-off, for example a late night gig in a pub, could suddenly change my sleep patterns all together. I would only stop to look at this situation when in a time of troubled slumber, but finally it felt time to address it squarely and consider it could be pushed in the right direction. Additionally, I didn't want to instantly head straight for meds. I already take pills for seizures, and if there's one thing I"ve learned it's that your sleep schedule is definitely thrown off when a dosage is increased and the body is still developing the tolerance.
I'll admit it, I chose the Verilux Happylight over other light boxes on the market because it was one of the top results on Amazon which checked all of my check boxes, including price range. I do not hold it in higher regard over the competition; how could I, when I have nothing to compare it too. All of the reputable brands in this market are driven by years of scientific research in order to improve one's well being and overall quality of life. I do, however, applaud Verilux' customer service for their willingness to take time and research the specifics of my query. I got regular updates throughout their quest for answers.
It's the beginning of August at the time of this initial review, so we are a length's way from the winter blues. However, over the past two weeks since I received the light box, I have been sleeping beautifully. Add in the fact that I am not a morning person, yet I have an easier time getting going in the mornings after sitting in front of the light. I follow Verilux's recommendations of 15 to 60 minutes in the morning, along with shorter sessions in the afternoon if necessary or for enjoyment. As many other customers have pondered, I wonder if it's a proven science or if the changes are psychological. Regardless, they are certainly welcomed.
If anyone I know wants to try light therapy based on my success story, I strongly encourage it. However, just like the Verilux team, I suggest they consult their eye doctor first to see if there are any long term side effects of staring into a bright fluorescent light of this caliber. I am not educated in the world of optics, let alone specific eye conditions. Hence, I do not feel I have the right to toss around blanket statements.

I have a pack of uv-beads on my desk that I was planning to use for a science experiment/demonstration with my child. For the unfamiliar, the beads are white/dull grey in normal indoor lighting, but when exposed to UV they start to glow in bright colors (pink, purple, green, etc.). They had been sitting on my desk looking gray for a few weeks. After doing a session with the Verilux lamp one morning I noticed they were glowing a bit, which I thought was odd. So I waited for them to "cool off" (turn grey again), and did a 20 minute light session with the beads in my lap in a room with no windows (just in case). After 20 minutes the beads glowed brightly. I had been using the "high energy" lens, and I repeated the experiment with the "comfort lens" and got the same results.
So the Verilux was definitely emiting UV, but as the saying goes, "it's the dose that makes the poison," and I wasn't sure how to quantify how much UV was coming out of the lamp (I don't have the necessary equipment). Then I figured out an easy test: the beads glow more quickly and more brightly when exposed to more UV, and glow less brightly/more slowly when exposed to lower UV levels. So I tried leaving the beads outside for 20 minutes at different times of day to see if I could get a calibration. With noon-day sun (in December), the beads were glowing much brighter than when I kept them in front of the Verilux, and started glowing brighter within about 5 or 6 minutes, so the Verilux emits much less UV than the sun at noon in winter, which is good. However, when I tested about an hour after dawn (also in December) the beads glowed a bit less strongly than they did when left in front of the Verilux, so the Verliux is emitting more UV than early morning sun in winter.
So I don't think that's a whole lot of UV emission, it's probably not enough to give most people a tan or a sunburn, but it's definitely more than none, which is what phrases like "UV-Free" imply. So if you're sensitive to UV or have related medical issues, you might want to look at a different lamp or use sun protection when sitting in front of it. If anyone wants to repeat my tests, you can get UV beads for 5-6 dollars on Amazon.
All that said, the lamp works great at its intended purpose. It's made my winter blues much, much better, which is why it gets three stars instead of one.

The lamp itself is small enough not to take up a huge footprint on your desk or counter. It has a long power cord, so it can reach outlets further away. The lamp swivels forward and back in its base, so you can place it on a surface above or below eye level and adjust its position accordingly. I often use it in the kitchen while I'm prepping meals--you can easily get in 10-20 minutes of light therapy while chopping, sauteeing onions, and packing the kids' lunches. I also get in some light therapy by moving the lamp (again, bonus for being a lightweight and small device) next to my desk and getting some rays while I binge watch Netflix, read the news, or watch a few clips on YouTube. Which brings me to my next point, don't feel like you have to sit down and do a one hour session at some appointed time daily. You can break up the light exposure into 10-20 minute increments, mimicking your exposure to actual sunlight during a summer day when might go in and outdoors throughout the day. You should not stare at the light itself; the lamp should however be pointed somewhere towards the front of your face. There is only one switch, which turns the device off, high, and low. And there are two lenses (the plastic covering to the bulb) which can be snapped on and off pretty easily and are held in place magnetically: the high-intensity lens and the comfort lens. The amount of light you can receive on this light are as follows:
High energy lens on high setting: 10,000 LUX
High energy lens on low setting: 7,500 LUX
Comfort lens on high setting: 5,000 LUX
Comfort lens on low setting: 3,500 LUX
For perspective, a clear spring morning sunshine gives you around 10,000 LUX while exposure to the sun at noon on a summer day is over 100,000 LUX. My therapist and numerous studies say that you need a lamp to provide at LEAST 10,000 LUX to be therapeutically effective, but I recommend experimenting with the levels and exposure. For some people, the bright light can give headaches or nausea. The product manual recommends for those folks to start low and work your way up to higher light settings. You should also consider the time of day that you are using the light. I like to use a high setting during the morning, but if it's already 6 pm when I get to sit down in front of Netflix (and it's already past sunset outside), I'll turn on the light on the lowest setting so I get some exposure. You don't want to use the lights too late into the evening or you'll mess with your internal circadian system and make it difficult to regulate sleep. I just try to use the lamp to mimic a late spring/early summer day during these fall and winter months.
Final warning, my therapist was adamant to warn that those suffering from bi-polar disorders have been shown to be negatively impacted by using light therapy. So if that applies to you, approach with caution.
