Review
“A significant improvement over what has been available in English of the previous century. . . . The translations presented here admirably achieve the aim set out by the series’ editors: ‘to be faithful to the Latin while reading idiomatically in English.’ . . . Hardship and Happiness is a handsome volume, beautifully conceived and executed.” ― Review of Metaphysics
“We owe a debt of gratitude to Chicago for this one-volume selection of essays from long ago, which still have the power to stimulate our minds today.” ― Classics for All --This text refers to the paperback edition.

Each book is preceded by a handy short introduction by the translator (four translators contribute to the book), then the translated text follows, with endnotes, which are usually followed by a bibliography for each chapter. One might wish to have a dictionary at hand while reading as some of the words can be a little unusual, but in general the wording has a pleasant enough flow to it keeping in mind the topic. I suppose that one either admires Seneca or not, I happen to like reading his ideas, though I do not always find myself in total agreement with him.

The introduction which attempts to present a primer on Stoicism in general and Seneca in particular is slightly dodgy in parts (even though written by a trio which includes the highly respected Martha Nussbaum), but it's worth it for the translations themselves. I'm gathering my shekels into a pile to buy the whole lot of the series.
The works included: The three Consolations (to Marcia, Helvia & Polybius), On the Shortness of Life, On the Constancy of the Wise, On Tranquility of Mind, On Leisure, On the Happy Life & On Providence. Each work has a brief introduction and following notes.
