About the Author

J.K. Rowling is best known as the author of the seven Harry Potter books, which were published between 1997 and 2007. The enduringly popular adventures of Harry, Ron and Hermione have gone on to sell over 500 million copies, be translated into over 80 languages and made into eight blockbuster films. Alongside the Harry Potter series, she also wrote three short companion volumes for charity: Quidditch Through the Ages and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, in aid of Comic Relief and Lumos, and The Tales of Beedle the Bard, in aid of Lumos. J.K. Rowling collaborated with playwright Jack Thorne and director John Tiffany to continue Harry's story in a stage play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which opened in London in 2016 and is now playing worldwide. In the same year, she made her debut as a screenwriter with the film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the first in a series featuring Magizoologist Newt Scamander, which was inspired by the original companion volume. J.K. Rowling has also written a standalone novel, The Casual Vacancy, and is the author of the Strike crime series under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. Both have been adapted for television. In 2020 J.K. Rowling returned to publishing for younger children with the fairy tale The Ickabog, the royalties from which she is donating to groups affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Her latest children's novel The Christmas Pig, a standalone adventure story, was published in 2021. She has received many awards and honours, including an OBE and a Companion of Honour for services to literature and philanthropy. She lives in Scotland with her family.

Jim Kay won the Kate Greenaway Medal in 2012 for his illustrations in A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness. He studied illustration at the University of Westminster and since graduating has worked in the Library & Archives of Tate Britain and the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. After producing a one-man exhibition at Richmond Gallery he was approached by a publisher and his freelance illustration work began. Jim has produced concept work for film and television, and contributed to a group exhibition at the V&A museum in London. He now lives and works in Northamptonshire with his partner.

My wife has so far collected all of the illustrated versions of the J.K. Rowlings Potter Novels. This one is the last and she loves it. One thing that she did find is that is much thicker - more pages and as a result the Hardcover edition is much heavier than the previous illustrated books - almost as heavy as all the previous ones combined. Can't wait until the final book - The Death Hallows is released - based on this one it may have to be done in two volumes - like the movie. Any way well worth the buy for any Potter Fans.

It's almost as if Jim Kay as eventually sat down and read the books and/or watched the movies. Because at last the illustrations look like what the books and movies desribe. At last he's realised the books are not just for the nursery. That Harry Potter fans range from four to ninetyfour and are not stuck at infants school. Maybe it's the influence of Neil Parker. Rumour as it Jim Kay was finding it all a strain and had to take a sabbatical and Neil Parker was brought in to help him out. Whatever the reason it helped bring the level of the illustrations up to more in line with the average reading age of the books and the mentality of the stories. The illustrations, with a few minor exceptions, actually look like the images we got from reading the books and watching the movies. His illustration of Harry actually look something like a recognizable Harry Potter as apposed to all his inconsistent attempts he did in the previous books where no two versions of Harry looked like eachother and were only distinguishable as Harry by the lightning bolt scar and the glasses. I only disliked two of his characters, in this book, Snape he illustrated too ugly.
Snape is dark, brooding and menacing but not ugly. The other is Dolores Umbridge; who he as depicted as a fat mad eye gorgon of a woman, but we know her best as smart over polite portly lady with a welcoming but malicious smile that belies the evil scheming ambitious politician within.
Some people have critized this volume because most of the fully page illustrations are at the beginning with a few towards the end with only a few margine doodles and decorations in the middle chapters. I understand what they mean and it as been suggested that is the result of his sabbatical and that he just ran out of time. Personally I don't mind that too much and find those small ornamentations more effective, somewhat more subtle and classy, than some of the more garish full page pictures.
But no what ever the reason for the improvements, long may it continue, and I hope for even more mature illustration in 'The Half Blood Prince' and by degrees we should get something special for the 'Deathly Hallows' but don't hold your breath.

I remember queueing outside Waterstones to buy the original Harry Potter books in Hardback on day of release many moons ago. I hated the films. Still do in fact, but the books are superb.

These illustrated versions are quite special. The pages are thick and glossy, very high quality, and each page is not only colourful but the illustrations are spectacular.

I have all the illustrated versions thus far, and despite being in my 50's now i thoroughly enjoyed re-reading these books, there is magic about the storys and luckily the illustrations dont resemble the movie cast. Reading the stpry again was a magical journey i engaged on for a few days. The book is quite heavy so i couldnt read it for long as it was hurting my hands. However reading a few chapters at a time gave me something to look forward to and despite getting this in perfect condition on day of release it took me a month to read it all the way through.

Truly beautiful edition that i am glad i have in my collection. I will enjoy them well into my old age.

I pre ordered and it’s just arrived. I am collecting them for nearly nine year old grandson Harry. I started when he was 3.5 but didn’t hand any over till he was 6 and had started reading his dads copies and had seen one of the films. His parents monitored his reading of books 3 and 4 because of his age and the content but he loved them. We have been waiting a long time for this book as they are getting thicker and taking more time to illustrate. He has read all of the non illustrated books and could well be in his mid teens before the series is complete, but they are so worth waiting for.

The stories are already legendary, but these illustrated versions are something else. I’m building up in the hope and expectation that we shall get to own the full set, as they are a simply marvellous book to have on the shelf. A real collector’s treat.

I tend to read books on the Kindle, but to have a quality physical book of such quality is a rare indulgence for me and I look forward to completing the set, at some stage.

The book itself is beautiful and the illustrations are very well done. However amazon either needs better packaging for books or needs to take more care delivering books. First item arrived ripped. Returned for replacement. Second item bashed. It's been refunded but it was a gift so disappointing that amazon couldn't guarantee an item in perfect condition. I'll take myself to a book shop instead.
