This is my top read this year and it beats anything I read last year as well.
This book is dark, twisted and sometimes sick. It is absolutely wonderful. I had to stop myself from reading this in 2 days because the second book is still in the post.
I'm obsessed (😏) with Calton's writing style and storytelling ability. I didn't think it was possible for me to fall in love with a stalker that does.. unspeakable things. But here I am, ready to be hurt again.
I will never understand the need for 1 starring a book that is not for me. If the TWs make you uncomfortable, it's so strange to then read it and rate it as a bad book. Some of the content was disturbing and sick, but I knew what I was getting into. Pay attention to the content warning and proceed with caution.
That said, I am so excited to read Hunting Adeline even though I KNOW crap is about to go down and I'll cry. I'm so emotionally invested in this twisted love story.
*Just because I enjoy this book and like Zade despite the content, in no way means I would accept this behaviour in real life. Cough. Let people enjoy fictional stories.*

The Manipulator
I can manipulate the emotions of anyone who lets me.
I will make you hurt, make you cry, make you laugh and sigh.
But my words don't affect him. Especially not when I plead for him to leave.
He's always there, watching and waiting.
And I can never look away.
Not when I want him to come closer.
The Shadow
I didn't mean to fall in love.
But now that I have, I can't stay away.
I'm mesmerized by her smile, by her eyes, and the way she moves.
The way she undresses...
I'll keep watching and waiting. Until I can make her mine.
And once she is, I'll never let her go.
Not even when she begs me to.
While not required, it is highly suggested to read the novella, Satan's Affair, first.
Author's Note: This book ends on a cliffhanger. For CWs, please check the author's website.

HEAVY ON THE TRIGGERS. Listen I’m not one to really be affected by the triggers, like I don’t really care, but this… oh it had me wanting to throw up ngl. Also it came in the bag packaging not a box right after it rained outside so I was a little worried but she made it.

I don’t know what I expected when starting this book..I know I was scared (rightfully so lol) but omg this book took me on a WILD ride. This duet is definitely my fav dark romance thus far and I couldn’t get enough.
Zade is a literal sta!?ker. There’s no beating around the bush here…but do I love him immensely? Yes. Don’t judge me mmkay?
You will question yourself and your own morals at times but you need to remind yourself that this is fictional and then carry on loving our zaddddyyyy
H.D. has a true gift of writing an extremely compelling plot that is filled with the most unpredictable plot twists and turns. The characters she creates has a way of getting into your mind and never leaving. They leave an unforgettable mark. Her talent at writing had me in awe and I could not get enough!
I fell so hard for Addie & Zade. Their story is dark, twisted and unforgiving but also addictive, raw and beautiful.
Always check trigger warnings PLEASE. This book is DARK.

I love this author so much, she explores a lot of tough subjects in interesting ways that make it impossible to stop reading. I can never predict what's going to happen in her books and I absolutely love it. The second book is much darker so keep that in mind.

The chokehold this duet has on me is unlike any other. This was my first dark romance, and as shocking as it was, it completely opened my eyes to the world of dark and twisted books. Zade is absolute perfection. While his methods for obtaining Addies affection are questionable in the real world, fictionally, I live for it! He goes absolutely feral for that girl and will tear the world apart for her, and that is the standard. Be sure to check the trigger warnings before diving in, but I highly recommend! Fave duet of all time.

There’s a small printing mistake in the book that blocked some of the words but nothing else was wrong about it. It was just on one page, no where else in the book.

Captivating, scary and will make you question your own sanity and values, but in the end you'll fall in love with it.

What can I say about Haunting Adeline.
I put off reading this for months because of how dark it was meant to be after reading numerous reviews. To anyone who is going to read this for the first time, yes, it is dark, so do NOT ignore the trigger warnings, but go into it blind. I wish I had. Do not read any other reviews.
This book has everything going for it. It has an unsolved murder, suspense, it’s a thriller and of course it has your dark romance.
Addie has inherited her family home, Parsons Manor, from her grandmother. Addy finds her great grandmother’s diaries. These reveal she had a stalker that she met and fell in love with, but also reveal she became very frightened for her life. Is it her husband or her lover who she is threatened by.
Zade sees Addie at one of her book signings and becomes Immediately, extremely addicted to her.
Zade is smart and we find there is so much more to him than meets the eye. He is a hacker and vigilante trying to bring down as many child/sex trafficking rings as he can. He may be a stalker but you can’t help fall in love with his character right from the very beginning.
QUOTES
“My little unsuspecting mouse, living each life without knowledge of what’s to come. Not knowing that I’m yearning for you, watching in the distance until I make myself known. For centuries, both of us wearing different faces, inhabiting different bodies. But the same souls, colliding over and over, until this planet decides to crumble and our souls have nowhere else to go.”
“My mother. Her favourite flowers were roses. She always had them all over the house with the thorns clipped so I wouldn’t hurt myself. One year, I told her that I would be sad when she died because all the roses would die with her. So, she gave me a plastic rose and said that as long as I have that rose, she would never truly be gone. I guess I wanted to see roses all over your house, too. Maybe because you feel like home”.
I can safely say this is one of my top 10 reads this year. I love books, but its rare I find one where I immediately want to read it again, never mind start book 2.

Wonderfully wicked!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on February 11, 2023Verified Purchase
Wow! Let’s start this by saying this book is not for the faint hearted, it’s dark and depraved and full of triggers. Check the trigger warning at the start but if you don’t like your anti-heroes treating the heroine with that same darkness then step away now. Let’s just say haunting is an apt title for the way daddy Zade treats Adeline but it’s just as delicious. So if you like your stories with all the darkness, debauchery and sinfully wicked acts then step right in but don’t say you weren’t warned. This book is downright wicked but I loved every minute. Zade is sinfully delicious and I shouldn’t like all his depravity but it’s impossible to resist. The plot and writing is incredible and the characters complex and I couldn’t put it down.

Well that was dark.
I went into this one blind, as usual, and due to the title fully just expected it to have some sort of paranormal/ghostly theme to it. Which it kind of did but in a very minute way.
What I didn’t expect was to read about a man whose morals are incredibly noble, who could be classed as a good man at his core, but isn’t actually a 𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘦 man. And what a dichotomy he is.
Zade is all about saving women and children from the clutches of the truly evil. He kills everyone he can involved in human trafficking and saves as many innocents as possible.
Yet when he sets his sights on Adeline and decides that she is the one…he 100% treats her like prey.
And Adeline? She loves it. But she doesn’t want to love it because she knows how messed up that is.
I don’t know how I feel about them. On the one hand I spent so much of the book wishing Adeline would just make up her damn mind already. Either you want to be with him or you don’t. The constant back and forth was annoying.
I still can’t get my head around her actually liking any of the way he treated her at first because I am very much not that way inclined.
And yet. And yet it’s a testament to Carlton’s writing that I was fully shipping them by the end.
It ends on a cliffhanger and I have my theories as to who is behind it all…but I’m also pretty sure I’m wrong.

Haunting Adeline is a dark romance novel. The first book of the Cat and Mouse duet series, with the second book awaiting publication.
Adeline has moved into her great-grandmother Gigi’s home and home to her late grandmother Serafina. The family home is haunted by the unsolved murder of Adeline’s great-Grandmother Gigi, when renovating the family home Adeline comes to find Gigi’s hidden diary. The diary reveals that Gigi had a stalker whom she fell in love with. The answers to her murder maybe hidden in the pages of her diary. Adeline is desperate to find out what happened to Gigi all them years ago, and shockingly similar is that Adeline is plagued with her own stalker hiding in the shadows.
Another character is Zade the ring leader of a vigilante group who are on a mission to bring down pedophile and human sex trafficking rings. Zade is no stranger to danger, risks his life to save children and young women from evil and help return them to safety. On his mission to rid the world of evil he stumbles across a bookshop hosting a meet and greet book signing, when Zade’s eyes fall on Adeline, he’s thrown by her beauty instantly and is determined to make her his own.
This book has a lot of different elements to it and although it is very dark on times it was gripping from start to finish, and unlike anything I’ve read before.
It’s a murder mystery, dark romance, haunted house and has a dark tone all in one. I loved this book, the writing style and Adeline and Zade were for me both very likeable characters. The story in my opinion was set out really well. I’d recommend reading Satans affair before reading this as there’s a great crossover.
Also something to keep in mind if you are a person who does not like cliffhangers, I would hold off from reading this book until the second book is available.
I just hope the wait for the second book isn’t to long!

Exceptional writing with one of the best book boyfriends in the end,
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on September 4, 2022Verified Purchase
Ok, so hear me out. Long post but had to be done because I'm fan girl.
I missed the initial release of this so only got the frenzy it caused through rec's. I'll admit, the comments about the triggers did make a difference. I put it in my TBR and waited. I finally decided to read both this week.
Firstly, I read both in less than four days. Couldn't put them down. To the point where I ignored phone calls from family!
Secondly, H.D. Carlton has a writing style that's exceptional as far as I'm concerned. The way she handled not only the spicy scenes but also the trauma and recovery scenes is beautiful. I'll admit I was questioning the MMC morals at the beginning but OMG, Zade is my new book boyfriend for so many reasons.
I've read Does it Hurt and that blew my mind. It was 🔥🔥🔥. But this duet? Chefs kiss! The way she handled the trauma and recovery, exceptional. The way Zade was portrayed. Chefs kiss!
Just a caveat, I totally understand why this is not for everyone because of the triggers. However, I totally believe in reading outside your comfort zone. I totally believe in reading new authors because you might just fall in love.
Please excuse me, I'm now off to find a house of mirrors to get lost in. 😏
