After a much longed-for reunion, Jason Asano works on moving past old traumas as he looks to a brighter future.
Despite warnings of danger that awaits him, he gets back in the saddle as an adventurer, ready to tackle new challenges.
But as enemies that have lurked in the background start moving into the light, those challenges are not hard to find.
Jason and his friends don’t wait passively; they use schemes of their own to take the fight to the enemy. His companions find themselves plunged into dangerous missions and confronted with enemies both personal and unexpected.
Jason will push new boundaries, and while it comes at a cost, it will move him deeper into the realms of cosmic power.

This series is hands down my favourite fantasy series I have ever read from book one and continues to be so. Every time a new book in this series is released. It always astounds me the level of quality above the rest these books are. Each book makes u feel sad to some degree, angry at times, and always makes you laugh your ass off. The intricately well crafted universe. The careful complexities of characters and power sets. How consistent the universe and power sets are. I am always blown away by how much I enjoy these books. To the point I delay finishing them so I don’t feel sad when it ends.

The story moves along nicely.
Good characters development with Dawn and with Jason.
His team gets stronger and they capture the leader of Purity’s fanatics in Rimaros. A priest of Purity is captured by Belinda.
Jason gets to have a discussion with the World Phoenix and the Builder. Then the god Dominion stops by his cloud house for a short chat to congratulate Jason on his territory/domain/soul space.
We also learn a bit more about what authority means for the astral beings.
Through all that we learn where Jason’s two familiar originated (part of the cosmos).
I really want to see what they will get up to in the future!

There are some series to start and can’t continue, but this isn’t one of them. If you haven’t started yet, I would wait to book 9 comes out, and then read the whole shebang.

This was a bit slow paced more politics than adventuring and setting the pace for the future seem to be a quick read didn’t too much like the receptiveness it was kinda like recaps that took up too much of the book, we have been following from book one so we know what’s up

I am always laughing at the silly side humour out MC makes. I am still at awe on the complexities of the story. The convoluted plotlines and the high magical mechanics that are explained are awesome. Keep up the good work! Thank you! I can't wait for the next book!

I wasn't looking for a new favourite author, just someone to fill the gap until Mr Salvatore delivered his next adventure, but in just a couple of short years, Mr Deverell has taken the top spot.
The world he has created is detailed, expansive and well-constructed. The characters are engaging, their interactions ranging from the comically absurd to highly emotional, andcwith a good amount of development outside the scope if the main character. The action is incredibly well thought put, while not relying on the huge numbers other authors use to generate excitement. Thankfully also absent are the swathes of graphic sex with multiple improbably proportioned partners - when you're this good, you don't need to resort to those tactics.
The whole system of 'game' mechanics are at genius level, and this is the area which really sets this series apart. Although this comes under LitRPG, this isn't a set of people within a game environment, min/maxing the system to take advantage of improbable loopholes, but instead using a game style interface from the point of view of the main character to make sense of the universal workings of the world (and cosmos) around him.
Overall this is another fantastic addition to the series, which has made me hold my breath in anticipation, and burst out laughing as 80s pop culture reference meets fantasy villain monologue. Recommended to fantasy fans everywhere, Pratchett fans especially, and anyone who wants to find out what an interdimensional Australian warlock ninja does next!

I stumbled across Shirtaloon a couple of months ago and have loved the books. Jason Asano is a treasure and the writing style is excellent with none of this incel harem nonsense.
The humour is wicked and on point and the action exciting.
Sometimes the lists and explanations of powers are a bit much and trying to keep up with the interactions and system evolutions can be a drag, but I don't hold it against the author as LitRPG is chock a block with incomprehensible garbage and over-powered and clueless jerks with the emotional range of a slightly dazed meercat.
Of course, Asano IS ridiculously overpowered, but it takes him a whi!e to build up and often bites off more than he can chew, accepting the consequences with style and wit.
Can't wait for number nine...

Jason continues to make a huge domineering spectacle of himself. But he also has more snappy one-liners, humorous moments, and comedic interactions with the people around him to make this a fun read with plenty to giggle about. And amphora.
Dawn is awesome, the bickering with Niel shows the true value of a bromance, and Clive's imaginary wife makes a welcome return. We even get a somewhat flirty interaction with Dawn's boss and the astral mega-douce Builder. Could he serious be doing all of this, just to impress a girl whose toenail clippings are older than his great-great-grandmother????

The story is as gripping, finny, sarcastic, and outright gorgeous as ever. What may be missed is the huge depth of insight the writer has for the human condition. So eloquent the lessons on humility, courage, truth, loyalty and on dealing with great responsibility and, soul shattering events that leave nothing but guilty, depression and a dark hatred of life in their wake.
I know this is a LitRPG novel, but Mr Asano would never be as crass as to talk of the Gulag Archipelago when he could describe Earth as Mostly Harmless while wearing a dressing gown.
Live long and Prosper.

Another great HWFWM instalment, maybe lacking in progress
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on January 5, 2023Verified Purchase
I've done reviews on a few of the books in the HWFWM series. Always loved the series, the magic system, the character and world building, the humour- all great stuff as ever, and definitely worth starting the series/ reading them all.
Book number 8 did have some interest developments and great battles, but it feels like the main character has stalled a bit in terms of progression. I don't recall any of his powers levelling up at all in book 8, it seemed to mostly be focused on improving universe-y, soul space power stuff, which is fine, but it's harder to qualify as a reader than the path of progression which has been followed more so in the previous seven books.
The lack of traditional progression might be by design to highlight just how much of a wall the characters hit when reaching silver 3/4- but if an entire 600-700 pages sees no further progression towards silver 4/5, will the characters ever be able to get to the peaks of gold and diamond? At the moment it's hard to see that. If it took seven books for the main character to reach the third tier of power, will it be another 20 books to reach the fifth?
Hopefully book nine in April will get back to progression through silver and into gold etc.
