This author is amazing. She gives you pieces of the puzzle and when you are almost ready to give up, the pieces start to fit. I loved this book but certainly not until about a third of the way in. Up to that point I was frustrated and nearly tossed it. But then it starts to come together and it turns out to be a terrific story. I enjoyed the characters especially dear Alf. Found the ending rushed and unclear on some points, like the Larry story line. Conversely I thought the beginning in Spain was a bit lengthy. I have read a lot of the time slip genre and I enjoyed them but thought this one flipped back and forth too much and sometimes I wondered what year I was in. Despite all these points I loved the book.

I have never written a one star book review...ever. But this book was awful.
The premise is common in many books--child searching for mother's history. Recent reads with this same plot were 'The Dressmaker's Gift' and 'The Tuscan Secret' which cleverly went back and forth between decades of time weaving then and now.
This book spent the first few chapters in Spain with Leo and family. Then for the rest of the book, no mention of them. No idea how they would tie in and surely they would or why else introduce these characters.
Romance? Nope...Ralph the loser husband is a non starter. Tom introduced in the 'then' part looked promising but then no further mention of him until near the end of the book.
The last few pages divulged the deathbed confession with ugly truths making the reader and Tara go 'Say WHAT?'.
The ending was angst filled, and frustrating for the characters and the reader and over all, unsatisfying.
I kept reading to the bitter end thinking it just HAD to get better based on the many 5 star reviews here.
There's many other much better summer reads...save yourself a few dollars and hours and give this one a pass.

I have read other books by this author and although her books are easy reads, she still manages to end each chapter in a way that makes you want to read ' just one more ' to find out what happens next. The story is set in two different time zones. In 1978 Tara is just 15 and lives with her mother Violet. They are very close and then Violet suddenly disappears. In 2018 Tara receives a letter which may shed some light into her mother's disappearance and she starts her journey to try and discover the truth. All in all I would definitely recommend this book as it was also pretty well researched too.

I've read all of Kathryn's books so when I saw that she'd written a new book i pre ordered it straight away. I devoured this wonderful book. It's written in Kathryn's unique style with wonderful characters who you really care about. This story is told in the present and the past and all the characters and their stories connect and come together as the story unfolds. This isn't a negative but I would have liked more about Tara and Violet at the end and felt it could have had possibly another two or three chapters maybe that's what the author intended for the reader to reach their own conclusions as to what happened next. Please read this wonderful book and I sincerely hope that Kathryn will write another. This book is well worthy of 5* from me.

I adored this book from the first to the last page. The choices we make a ripple and change other peoples lives too but for Tara Richards, it was more like a tsunami that ripped apart the life she had always known.
Violet Dobbs is a single mum and night club singer, doing the best she can for herself and her fourteen-year-old daughter Tara, so when the opportunity to make huge life changes for them both comes up she grabs it with both hands. That is the last night Tara saw her, now almost forty years later a letter and a mysterious key to a safety box will open up those lost years.
This isn’t just a visual read, I can still hear the music and Violet singing, see her wardrobe and feel the love that she has for Tara. Tara was her world. Violet was a bit of a dreamer though often aiming pretty high for a new life for them both.
I adored so many of the characters, Tara of course but also Alf their landlord. What a lovely man he is. Besides the story of Tara taking place over two times lines, one being in the 1970s which brought the era to life with perfection and present day, there are two separate stories taking place too. One in Spain the other in the UK, revolving around two sets of brothers. The background to the brothers is worlds apart, each one moulding the men that they would become. I knew that somewhere in the future I would meet them again.
This is quite an epic read that I didn’t want to come to an end and impossible not to become part of this book emotionally. Beautifully written, it will stay with me for a very long time.

Kathryn Hughes is a wonderfully gifted storyteller and this book again showcases her talent for spinning a richly imagined tale with a fascinating cast of characters. It is evocative and poignant, relentlessly compelling, and alight with sparks of laugh-out-loud humour.

The story is told in two timelines. The first takes place in 1978 and focuses on single mum Violet Skye, who scrapes a living as a club singer to support herself and her young daughter, Tara. The second shoots forward 40 years, where we find Tara, separated and single, her life thrown into emotional disarray with the receipt of a mysterious letter. As the separate stories unfold and gradually weave together, Tara uncovers long-hidden secrets and must face a new reality that forever changes both her past and her future.

I liked very much that Tara tells her own story in her own voice. This makes her highly convincing and draws the sympathy of the reader. I was totally invested in her voyage of discovery and truly cared what became of her. I also loved the clever twists which took me completely by surprise and added an extra layer of pleasure to an already compelling narrative.

However, as other reviewers have noted, I too was disappointed at the abrupt ending to the novel. Yes, there was resolution and all the loose ends got tied up, but I fully expected to turn the page of the last chapter and find an epilogue. The absence of one left me frustrated and a little bit cheated. For this reason, I have to knock off one star.

Another by this author earning a very well-deserved 5* from myself. She never lets me down. It's lucky she doesn't rattle her books off 4 times a year because we'd all be basket-cases !! They're always so emotional and touching and guaranteed to have me howling by the end, or even in the middle !! (Very akin to Dani Atkins' stories).
I was very intrigued to know how the characters we were being introduced to were all going to marry up in the conclusion and I hadn't figured it out, which is always very satisfying as well. Some likeable characters, too.....I loved Alf and Tom and Leo and Mateo....and Diablo as well. Seems I picked all the male characters more than the female !!
I have the beautiful cover on my version as well, with the flowers and letters. Really pretty.
There were some very funny moments in this, too.....it's definitely not all tears and doom 'n' gloom. I laughed aloud at the reference to a Barbie phase and also the refugee family.
Another passage I highlighted is when Dylan said, "I wanna say....Sadie ?" I HATE that dumb expression kids seem to utilise a great deal lately.....it means nothing !!
I did smile at the author's reference to her parents at the end, too....that is very sweet.
There were quite a few instances of speechmarks being missed for some reason and not caught but that was it for errors, so that helped made the whole experience more of a delight for this reader.
