Internationally best-selling author Francine Rivers—winner of a Christy Award and the ECPA Gold Medallion—crafts a riveting tale of mother/daughter bonds stretching across decades. Strong-willed Marta leaves Switzerland early in the 20th century and settles in California. Though Marta loves her eldest daughter Hildie, they often clash as they attempt to find their places in the world.

So much compassion for the women in this novel. They are so complex and have many layers to their personalities and lives. I couldn't stop reading and quickly purchased the second book to this series!

Excellent book! Francine Rivers is my favorite author. She gets it right every time! The interaction between the characters is spot on! This book echoed my own family history in a way that amazed me. I have passed the book on to my mom, hoping she will appreciate it as much as I did. Loved this book! :)

I could not put this book down. It is a long time since I read a Christian book that kept me so focused on reading. This is one of Francine's best and I cant wait to finish this one and start on the second of the series. Makes you realise how easy we have things today, but I dont think we appreciate anything the same way they did in the early 1900's. Thank you Francine, you are an inspiration to all Christian women.

This is the first part of a story starting in Switizerland, followed by Marta's Legacy - Her Daughter's dream, and covers the fascinating lives of four generations, from Switzerland - to England, to Canada and finally to the U.S.A. Wonderful characters and experiences - a truly good read.

A very good read...

Francine Rivers's book took me on a journey of self discovery. The book deals with family, and the relationship, between a parent and their child. This is a book highlighting the journey of a young woman, who left home, to gain her indepence and the trials she faced along the way. The relationship with the protaganist parents', especially her father was responsible for the way she viewed men in general and society. This is a christian novel, that wasn't overtly preaching about morality and decadence, neither was it boring. It starts off slow at first, but as the reader gets engrossed in the book, as the story unravels and gets more intriguing. I would love to read more of Francine Rivers's books.

This book is by far the best I have read in a long time. Spanning many years it is the kind of family saga that I really love. By the end of the book I felt I actually knew the characters and had been travelling with Marta on her long journey through difficult and inspiring situations. Can't recommend this enough to any who love a gripping yarn!

A family United

This is a thought provoking book about family and how we can go about things in the wrong way thinking we're doing it right. We can all perceive thing's wrongly. Love is the major factor. With God every thing is possible.
