The second original series of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy remastered by Dirk Maggs (director of the Tertiary, Quandary and Quintessential Phases) to give a full, vibrant sound, now with Philip Pope’s version of the familiar theme tune and specially re-recorded announcements by John Marsh.

Stranded on Prehistoric Earth since the end of the first series, Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect are once again trying to hitch their way off the planet. Zaphod finds his visit to the offices of the Guide rudely interrupted by Frogstar fighters, who further threaten to feed him to the Total Perspective Vortex. Eventually reunited, the three fetch up on the planet Brontitall and discover the indigenous species in something of a flap. Arthur meets Lintilla (several of her), Marvin gets to be a hero once again, and there is a meeting with the Man in the Shack who apparently runs the Universe....

Peter Jones, Simon Jones, Geoffrey McGivern, Mark Wing-Davey, Stephen Moore and a full supporting cast star in these BBC Radio 4 episodes.

Also included is a bonus 50-minute interview with Douglas Adams - who died in 2001 - in which he discusses his career and work.

In this, the second instalment of Douglas Adams' Hitch Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy, we are treated to more insane, inane, whacky and downright wierd adventures of Arthur Dent, Ford Prefect, Zaphod Beeblebrox and Marvin the paranoid android. Ford and Arthur need to find a way off prehistoric earth by flagging down an only partially existant spaceship, while Zaphod receives a message from himself in a dream and setsoff ona crazy quest to find some cat named Zarniwoop. As they cross time and space on a highly improbable (but not impossible) journey, they go through mind boggling adventures and discover 15 mile high statues of themselves and the reason for birds.

Not as hysterically funny as the first series there is still more than enough humour here to keep you laughing, and some very good plot devices. Aided by great performances from the cast, this is a treat and an essential listen to those who want to know what happens to Arthur and Co after being stranded on prehistoric earth.

This CD release from the BBC is excellent, with a great sound quality far superior to my old somewhat muddy copy. Two episodes per disc on 3 discs, held in a double jewel case. It's a classic, and has been given the decent release it deserves. 5 stars.

This (second) series of THHGTTG is much ore scrappy than the others. The plot is less focused and although it's the usual Douglas Adams outing of ridiculous, piquant sci-fi humour, the zany interludes (of which there are many) unbalance the story.

It's still good, but it isn't up to the standard of the author's other offerings.
