Product description

And so we enter the middle section of Peter Jackson's massive Hobbit trilogy, carved from the single slim volume of J.R.R. Tolkien's original adventure tale. Reluctant hobbit hero Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman, just right) is trekking away with his dwarf colleagues, all headed to the treasure-laden mountain where the mighty fire-breathing dragon Smaug resides. This being a Jacksonian roller-coaster ride, we've first got to travel through the mysterious Mirkwood forest (where giant spiders await--yipes) and then escape from a castle where the elf ruler (Lee Pace) and his son Legolas (Orlando Bloom) view the dwarfs skeptically. Jackson also invents a character here, a female elf-archer (Evangeline Lilly), a rather welcome addition of female kick-assery. The escape in oaken casks down a raging river is literally a barrel of fun--blink and you've missed three sight gags. The wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) is unfortunately elsewhere for much of the film, although of course McKellen delivers ominous one-liners like nobody's business. There's a general sense of place-holding, and the cliffhanger ending leaves no doubt that The Hobbit is meant to be seen as one long movie, with Smaug barely working as a stand-alone. And what about Smaug, that digital dragon who slithers around atop a mountain of gold coins and jewels? Benedict Cumberbatch provides the voice, and he sure does talk a lot (the film in general is quite the gabfest). Confirmed fans will have no problem with the movie's flaws (and at least the juvenile humor of An Unexpected Journey is held at bay here), although non-Tolkienites will likely be puzzled at why it's taking so long to go there and back again. --Robert Horton
--This text refers to an alternate blu_ray edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST have for your collection! You won't regret it.
By Painfultears on February 19, 2015
First off I agree that there is a lot in this movie that wasn't present in the book, but people must remember that this is the movie..not the book! It has to appeal not only to those of us who read and love The Lord Of The Rings/The Hobbit books but to those whom have never laid hands on a J.R.R. Tolkien masterpiece. What Peter Jackson has done is amazing and the fact that even with the changes made compared to the book has drawn many people young and old to the beloved books is a bonus in my eyes. It is VERY rare to see a movie made based on a book that doesn't have changes of some sort.

Now for the movie..WOW ! I can't find enough amazing words for it ! It turned me into a drooling geek :-) I didn't want it to end and the 3D in this movie ... out of my whole movie collection the BEST one so far! I couldn't stop grinning ear to ear while watching it. The depth of the 3D really helped me immerse myself into the scenes. The extended footage blended in so well and I would never want to waste my time with the non extended version !

Included in this set is also the extended version with the film makers commentary and a segment called "New Zealand: Home Of The Middle-Earth part 2" If you get the time watch it! You wont regret it. Also part 9 of the appendices INTO THE WILDERLAND - The Chronicles Of The Hobbit- Part 2 which features cast and crew sharing their experiences and stories during the making of the movie. Disc 5 has The Appendices Part 10 THE JOURNEY TO EREBOR giving you a glimpse at how things went from concept to creation showing off the high frame-rate 3D technology.
This 5 disc set has me geeking out so much ..I really can't say enough about it!

If you have the ability to play a 3D movie then don't hesitate on buying this one ! It truly is a MUST for our collection !
