Every day I clean the Winchesters’ beautiful house top to bottom. I collect their daughter from school. And I cook a delicious meal for the whole family before heading up to eat alone in my tiny room on the top floor.
I try to ignore how Nina makes a mess just to watch me clean it up. How she tells strange lies about her own daughter. And how her husband Andrew seems more broken every day. But as I look into Andrew’s handsome brown eyes, so full of pain, it’s hard not to imagine what it would be like to live Nina’s life. The walk-in closet, the fancy car, the perfect husband.
I only try on one of Nina’s pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it’s like. But she soon finds out… and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it’s far too late.
But I reassure myself: the Winchesters don’t know who I really am.
They don’t know what I’m capable of…

Nina Winchester is the matriarch of the Winchester home. She seemingly has it all. Gorgeous, rich husband. Adorable daughter. Vice president of the PTA. But above all that, she is a bit “eccentric.” Everyday Millie cleans the house spotless, and every morning she wakes up the find it completely trashed again. Not to mention she also has to deal with Nina’s spoiled daughter. The only good part of this deal seems to be Nina’s husband, Andrew.
Nothing is as it seems in The Housemaid. Everyone has secrets, and this is one of those stories that keeps you guessing from the beginning. I will admit that by the 60% mark I was feeling a little bored, but immediately got sucked right back in. This isn’t one of those stories where I was left with all the answers, but I definitely had all the answers I needed. It is one of those stories that works backwards in a way until you figure everything out.
Fair warning, if you don’t like unrealistic endings, this book is not for you. But for a fast paced thriller I really enjoyed it.
I loved the point of view writing and the foreboding feeling the author creates from page 1!
Definitely a fun summer read!

I combined reading with its unabridged audiobook edition, narrated by Lauryn Allman.
Right from the above opening lines I was hooked.
This is one of those domestic noirs/psychological thrillers that I feel is best read ‘cold’, so just the barest of details.
After the Prologue we go back three months earlier.
The housemaid of the title is Millie, who has applied for the position of live-in housekeeper for the wealthy Nina and Andrew Winchester. Millie is on parole and really needs this job. No further details though as might be expected from this type of thriller and the Prologue’s teaser, things get quite complicated.
Most of the novel focuses upon the dynamic between these three adults, though there is also the Winchester’s spoiled nine-year-old daughter, Cecelia, to add to Millie’s torments. At her first meeting with ‘CeCe’ she thinks “I’d say there’s at least a twenty-five percent chance she’s going to murder me in my sleep if I get this job. But I still want it.”
With respect to the audiobook, I felt that Lauryn Allman did an excellent job of capturing the characters, especially the two narrative points of view, Millie and Nina. Her voice is quite mellow and very easy to listen to. I have enjoyed her narration on two other recent audiobooks.
Overall, one of the best, twisty, unputdownable psychological thrillers that I have read for a while. After such a positive experience, I plan to check out Freida McFadden’s earlier novels as well as look out for her future projects.

It has been a long time since a psychological thriller has thrown me completely off guard. I could not put this down and ‘One More Chapter’ turned into hours of reading. This is easily a one sitting book for those who have the time to do that. I am going to gush about this book in a way that gives nothing away – which isn’t easy.
I love the character of Milly. She is far from perfect but has a strong sense of justice and right from wrong. She is so determined to sort out her life and it seems as though things just keep getting in her way that are out of her control – to some degree. Freida McFadden has very cleverly created a character that you side with instantly and want to protect, despite knowing things about her that could mean all is not as seems.
The plot is dark and addictive and kept me on the edge of my seat. Just when I thought I had my head around what was happening – there was a massive curveball which shook me to the core. The very ending was absolutely superb and very cleverly done. I was cheering!
McFadden has created three main characters (Milly, Andy and Nina) who are neither trust worthy or seemingly reliable narrators. I was suspicious of everyone. Nina and Andy both are written in such a wonderfully creepy way. They completely got under my skin and I was made to hate them by such clever writing.
The Housemaid is a superb, fast paced, addictive and compelling thriller and I cannot recommend it enough.

That is until Mrs Winchester’s seemingly split personality emerges in full force, driving Millie up the wall. But Millie must go on; who knows when she’ll find another job! And let’s not forget to mention the handsome and kind Mr Winchester, Mrs Winchester’s husband, whose warming presence makes Millie’s job somewhat bearable.
🥀 MY THOUGHTS 🥀
Personally, I found this to be an extremely bland and unimaginative domestic thriller, with every twist startlingly identical to those used in various other novels e.g.
🌼 a creepy attic room that only locks from the outside like in “The Death of Mrs Westaway”
🌼 a woman in an abusive marriage pretending to be crazy while she looks for her “replacement” - literally IDENTICAL to the plot twist in “The Wife Between Us”
🌼 a woman with dark secrets coming to work for and live with a rich family, after which, bizarre things start happening - too similar to the plot line in “The Turn of the Key”
🥀 SUMMARY 🥀
An entertaining, fast-paced read with short snappy chapters. Moderately suspenseful but very averagely written with a severe lack of originality. Not the best but certainly not terrible.

So I did!
And they were right!
Millie is just out of prison and living in her car. She is desperate for a job so she can get some semblance of life back. She doesn't hold much hope, failing interview after interview so she is not really that fussed bout lying when she meets The Winchesters for another soon-to-be-failed-too interview.
But joy upon joys, she is hired.
But all is not as it first appeared for this couple, as Millie will soon discover.
And that's all I'm saying as you really need to discover all the twists and turns as the author intended. Suffice to say they are all banging and, well, I really wasn't ready for the book going there. It's a bit of a swallow tbh and there were some things I ummed about. But it was so good, the build up, that I was more than happy to suck some of my niggles up, gladly.
And... the best bit of all... there's a next in series coming soon... Yay!

Having said this though, I must admit that I almost gave up on the story about half way through as I began to find the storyline rather depressing and I found myself wondering if the main character, the housemaid, would really put up with all that was being heaped upon her, especially given her background. But I am glad I didn't as the plot really takes off in a dramatic fashion in part two and I found myself wanting to race ahead to find out what happens next ... and I really liked the final twist that appears in the epilogue.
So, overall, this really is an unputdownable thriller and certainly one of the best I have read so far this year. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys stories that are full of chilling menace, great characters and dramatic twists as the story unfolds.
