This book was an intriguing read from beginning to end. The plot itself was familiar in that it starts off with a society that favours the magic few who are self serving and evil governors. The main character discovers she is powerful and, together with a few others, drives a resistance movement to over come the evils mages.
There are a few differences though that make this world, and the plot line, unique. First, the main character is mute. The story creates a really effective balance between what the main character is thinking and how she communicates with those around her. I thought Helen did a fantastic job weaving the different communication types together to form a cohesive whole.
Second, the world is one where there is a group of people named the Afflicted who reminded me of ‘intelligent zombies’. You encounter them early on and they are portrayed as violent with a desire to kill and eat anyone they encounter. As such, no one can go outside after dark and the curfews are strictly regulated. These characters play a larger role as the plot develops and Helen does a great job of creating intrigue about them and setting them up for a growing part of the puzzle in future books.
Lastly, the role of women is a significant theme in the book, in particular as they are viewed as non magical entities. When a female is discovered to have magic, they are kidnapped (often as a baby) and disappear seemly forever. This kick starts the main story line as the fmc and resistance seek to discover what’s happening to the babies.
As usual with Helen Harper, her writing draws you in and holds you as if you’re right there with the characters. This book had a more serious flavour compared with some of her other series but still highly enjoyable.
