The best way to live in the Mage ruled city of Glasgow is to keep your head down and your mouth closed.
That’s not usually a problem for Mairi Wallace. By day she works at a small shop selling tartan and by night she studies to become an apothecary. She knows her place and her limitations. All that changes, however, when her old childhood friend sends her a desperate message seeking her help - and the Mages themselves cross Mairi’s path. Suddenly, remaining unnoticed is no longer an option.
There’s more to Mairi than she realises but, if she wants to fulfil her full potential, she’s going to have to fight to stay alive - and only time will tell if she can beat the Mages at their own game.
From twisted wynds and tartan shops to a dangerous daemon and the magic infused City Chambers, the future of a nation might lie with one solitary woman.
Hummingbird is the first thrilling book in A Charade Of Magic. The fight for freedom starts here.

About the author

After teaching English literature in the UK, Japan and Malaysia, Helen Harper left behind the world of education following the worldwide success of her Blood Destiny series of books. She is a professional member of the Alliance of Independent Authors and writes full time, thanking her lucky stars every day that's she lucky enough to do so!
Helen has always been a book lover, devouring science fiction and fantasy tales when she was a child growing up in Scotland.
She currently lives in Edinburgh with far too many cats – not to mention the dragons, fairies, demons, wizards and vampires that seem to keep appearing from nowhere.

There are a few differences though that make this world, and the plot line, unique. First, the main character is mute. The story creates a really effective balance between what the main character is thinking and how she communicates with those around her. I thought Helen did a fantastic job weaving the different communication types together to form a cohesive whole.
Second, the world is one where there is a group of people named the Afflicted who reminded me of ‘intelligent zombies’. You encounter them early on and they are portrayed as violent with a desire to kill and eat anyone they encounter. As such, no one can go outside after dark and the curfews are strictly regulated. These characters play a larger role as the plot develops and Helen does a great job of creating intrigue about them and setting them up for a growing part of the puzzle in future books.
Lastly, the role of women is a significant theme in the book, in particular as they are viewed as non magical entities. When a female is discovered to have magic, they are kidnapped (often as a baby) and disappear seemly forever. This kick starts the main story line as the fmc and resistance seek to discover what’s happening to the babies.
As usual with Helen Harper, her writing draws you in and holds you as if you’re right there with the characters. This book had a more serious flavour compared with some of her other series but still highly enjoyable.

But as a Scot myself, some errors pulled me out of the story before I’d even gotten 10% through. Scots spellings were wrong, for example she uses ‘nay’ when ‘nae’ is the correct Scots spelling. Also she mixes east and west coast dialect, using west terms like ‘hen’ but east word like ‘ken’.
Also some of the discussion of tartans was wrong - tartan is the pattern created by weaving, not an actual fabric type, and can be any material you can weave including silk, wool (of different weights and including cashmere), cotton, polyviscose etc. Most people think of tartan wool, which makes kilts, but that’s not the only woven tartan fabric.
All of these errors are small and could be cleared up by a decent editor/fact checker with knowledge of Scotland so still very much a 4* read for me, 5 with editing. Storyline is great and can’t wait to read the next instalment!

But the characters are really interesting. And I'm hoping the author course corrects for the next one.

I really feel like a toddler about to throw a tantrum because it's favourite toy has been taken away.
Any book by Helen Harper is excellent but this was just amazing. Really can't wait for the next one.
