I enjoyed the quirky but believable characters in the book. The plot is complicated and involves imaginative storytelling by the author. Some suspension of belief is required of the reader. I thought its organization made it a compelling read. Two separate modern day stories are told along with events and characters 23 years earlier. I liked how there stories were told in alternate chapters leaving me wondering what would happen next to the people in each chapter. As I read I kept puzzling in what way these people could be connected.
Alice, a single mother of three children by different fathers, has moved with her children and three dogs to a small house by the sea. There have been a series of bad decisions in her life, especially those involving men. One day she sees a man sitting on the beach in the cold rain. She brings him a jacket, and learns he has been sitting there a long time with no memory of who he is or how he got there. Later she brings him home despite some disapproval by others.
Lily has been married only a couple of weeks. She met her husband, a handsome Englishman, while he was working in the Ukraine where she lived. They returned from their honeymoon to an apartment in England. Her husband is a creature of habit, always taking the same route home from work and arriving at the same time after sending her romantic messages. One evening he fails to show up or contact her. She is alone in a new country. She feels strongly that something terrible has happened to him. The police don’t take his disappearance seriously until they learn that his passport is fake, and no one by that name existed.
Some 20 years earlier teenaged brother and sister are spending a holiday with there family by the sea. A 19 year old male is paying too much attention to 15 year old Kirstin. Her brother, Gray, feels there is something sinister about him. After a few dates his possessive behaviour begins to seem creepy to Kristin who starts avoiding him.
Finally all the stories all connect towards the end in a satisfying manner. I found the author’s strength was in creating odd but believable characters. This was a complex,(if far fetched plot) which was propelled by the organization of the chapters. She is an imaginative storyteller, and I will look for other books by the author.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.

The cover front and back are worn out. The first few pages bindings were ripped.I paid $10. Not bad for the condition it is.Good thing I have self adhesive book covers which should help with the wear and tear of this book. The shipment was very fast.I can’t wait to read this book.

This was enjoyable character driven mystery. A simple enough plot -
Alice, a single mother, who lives in a cottage by the sea in Northern England wakes up one day to see man sitting on the beach. He doesn't seem to be homeless or a drug addict. She offers him coat and discovers he has no memory of who he is or where he has been. Against her better judgement (and Alice has history of making bad decisions when it comes to men) she invites him to take shelter in little cottage/shack she has in her back yard until he regains his memory.
Meantime in London, Lilly a young newlywed from the Ukraine who just moved to the UK with her British husband, whom she met abroad discovers her husband missing. She reports his disappearance to the police but then is only confronted with more disturbing news - that the man she knows never existed.
Is the disappearance of the Lilly's husband and the appearance of the strange man in Alice's backyard somehow linked? Slowly fragments of the strange man's memories come back. And everything seems to hinge on events that happened one summer in long ago.
Lisa is a great writer and spins a compelling read out of a fairly simply plot. Her characters are also great - especially that of Alice.

Edge of your seat psychological thriller.
Alice Lake is unconventional, rescuing an amnesiac man her children name Frank creates conflicting emotions.
As Frank begins to recover bits of his past in Ridinghouse Bay, a newlywed recent immigrant, Lily Monrose, is worried when her husband Carl fails to return from his job in London. The more Lily delves into Carl's life the more questions she has.
The novel switches between three main individuals and the years 2015 and 1993.
The story wraps up all the various characters and plots leaving the reader feeling at peace after a very intense 352 pages.
I enjoyed this much more than Girl On The Train. British terminology is used but is easily identifiable at to it's North American name.

I was instantly drawn into the mystery, but for me, it went on far too long. I was almost going to stop reading or cheat and read ahead, but because of the mostly very favorable reviews, I decided to slog it out. I'm very glad I did - it was a first class ending. However, I still think it could have achieved with at least 1/3 less of the story. Well- written though!

Another splendid novel from Lisa Jewell.

I am rapidly becoming a fan of this author, a very recent discovery. After "Watching You" and "Then She Was Gone", I wondered whether the author could offer yet again something exceptional. Indeed she could. Jewell handles the most intricate of plots with immense skill. After some time the line of development becomes clear but the suspense holds through the fully developed characters of the principals. Time can be tricky and flashbacks an irritant, but here things are woven together so cleverly that we are wholly absorbed in the lives of highly interesting and credible characters. I shall certainly read more of Ms. Jewell's work and would appreciate pointers towards other novels comparable with these three.

I have read most of Lisa Jewell's books now and I thoroughly enjoy them. In fact, I credit her novels as getting me back into reading. This had to be something truely gripping as a working mother of 3, as time is short! Now that I know I like this genre I have tried to explore other authors but I always come back to hers. I read this on holiday over 2 days which has never happened before! Twisty, brilliant characters and easy to read without having to flick back to work out who is who in the early pages.

Far from being a thriller

Completely average. No twists. You can guess everything as the plot is laid in front of you without any red herrings.
But the biggest problem was that I was expecting a thriller, not a cosy mystery. The writing lacked the darkness, grittiness and suspense needed in a thriller.
The villain proved to be the weakest protagonist in the story. He didn't invoke any feelings in me: he sounded too cliché, too odd, too much, to be realistic enough. I think his history needed more exploration so he could show more complexity and conflict within himself.
The main couple was the redeeming salvation: their well rounded characters and their developing relationship rang truer. They were cute and I did like them.

This is one of the very best books I've read in years, I could not put it down finished in a day! A truly absorbing story that's sucks you in and keeps you there until the very last page. Alice a mother of three lives in a small seaside town in Yorkshire, whilst walking her crazy dogs on the beach one day she comes across a sad soaking wet man with no memory, Alice let's 'Frank' (named by her youngest daughter Romaine) into her home and into her family as he tries to unlock his memories. I won't say anymore here as I don't want to spoil it for you, but this really is an amazing book, I will be reading every other book by this wonderfully original author. Great work Lisa keep them coming!! Very highly recommend.

3.5 stars.
I go to Lisa Jewell when I want a quick, pacey story that I can race through, and this is exactly what I got. As ever, she has some intriguing characters, lacing the past with the present in a non-contrived way that makes you read far too quickly. My one grip on this on is that the 'baddie' was really a tad unbelievable, though I'm betting he has some basis in a real life person. Why is it that sometimes we tolerate less in fiction than in real life? But that aside, this is a great pace turner of a story, and I will definitely be going back for more. Again.
