Anwen's uncanny resemblance to Princess Lavena has been a curse since the moment she entered her service, as the spoiled princess has frequently used it to her advantage by forcing Anwen to switch places with her. But Princess Lavena's latest scheme is her worst - and most dangerous - yet: compelling Anwen to take the princess's place in her marriage to her loathed fiancé, Prince Liam.
Bound by an enchanted contract not to reveal the charade, Anwen is forced to go through with the masquerade and endure a marriage to a man who despises the woman he believes her to be. As time goes on, Anwen struggles not only to maintain her identity, but to fight her deepening feelings as she begins to fall in love with her new husband, a man who not only isn't hers to keep, but who has no idea who she really is.

Having loved the first two books in this series (yes! Rosie too! ;) Loooved her hilarious and witty banter with Alastair!), I was a bit disappointed with this one. The premise was exciting, I'd adored Liam in the previous books and was curious about getting to know Lavena's mysterious look-alike maid Anwen, and I was eager for previous characters to make an appearance.
Liam and Anwen's romance itself is adorable, with some seriously swoony scenes where I was staring transfixed at the page (hehe! ), and I loved seeing Aiden and Eileen again. But two main things troubled me.
***SPOILERS AHEAD!!***
1) Anwen herself I found difficult to fully understand or warm to. Her character seems a bit undefined. Her attempts to get out of her difficult situation and stand up to Lavena seemed weak and not as clever as I'd have expected for a girl who loves reading about insects. Much of the time she is feeling sorry for herself, yet her position is actually not as hard as I was expecting since Liam warms to her very quickly and she is able to act mostly like herself rather than Lavena, despite her fears of losing her identity. She is sweet, kind, and easily cowed, yet in a few scenes she suddenly takes charge and becomes more confident, but then goes back to her previous "self." I think part of the problem is we don't get to know her much before she has to pretend to be someone else.
2) My biggest problem was with the ring contract itself. It bound her to pretend to be Lavena, yet in most respects the ring allowed her to act very unlike Lavena. She was very upset about losing herself, and yet in practice she hardly had to change anything. It helped her greatly that there was a get-out presented to her: to claim that she was only acting nasty towards Liam before because she didn't want to marry him, and now that she was marrying him, she could be her nice self again. Liam bought this very quickly. But it went even further than that: she could speak excitedly about insects, rise early, and do many other very-un-Lavena-like things without the ring objecting - unless she got TOO excited about insects or tried to directly say she wasn't Lavena. This for me watered down the whole conflict about having to pretend to be someone she wasn't, as well as the core conflict about identity.
However, there is still a lot to enjoy in this book (especially those romance scenes in the first half!) and it's wonderful to continue in the beautiful world Camille Peters has created. I'm definitely looking forward to upcoming books!

The one thing I didn't like was that when it became necessary to the plotline, it was suddenly possible to break an unbreakable contract... even though the entire book before that had Anwen trying and failing to escape from another one. This plot hole lost the book most of a star. The other fractional-star lost is because the princess has no redeeming qualities AT ALL, and I like my villains to have at least SOMEthing going for them.

I've always been a fan of The Goose Girl fairy tale. Especially after reading Shannon Hale's version. I loved how Camille Peters created her own twist on this great tale of mistaken/hidden identity. The opening chapter, wow! I didn't know how she was going to spin this one and make it work, but that opening chapter was very creative. And it just kept going from there.
Prince Liam has been one of my favorites from the very beginning of this series. And I think he just took the number one spot for being my favorite in this series! Oh heavens. His smirk and his comments. Just love him! Especially when he makes comments regarding how he's working at being a good husband. He's so sweet and thoughtful and always leaving sweet gifts for Anwen...I mean Lavena.
Anwen was such a fabulous character as well. She was so well written and developed. Especially with her inner struggle at trying to be true to who she was and still having to portray Lavena. I really want to tell you more about that but if I do, I'll spoil it. And I'm a no spoilers kinda gal. So I have to seal my lips...errrr ummmm, stop my fingers from typing. Lol!
This title is the PERFECT title for this book. Honestly, the theme of this book was so well woven into the story and characters. *happy and contented sigh*
I can't recommend this book enough! If you haven't read any of the other books, you'd be just fine reading this one. The author wrote it in a way to make it a stand alone. There are previous characters in the series, main and secondary ones, who show up but they're explained enough to make it work. As much as I loved book one, Pathways, this one is my favorite in the series so far! If you love fairy tale retellings and hidden identities and sweet, clean romance, grab this one now. Make it your summer read!
Content: Clean. There is kissing but nothing further.
Happy Reading!!!
