5.0 out of 5 starsGreat condition + great book
Reviewed in Canada on May 11, 2021
Quality: It came in perfect condition! I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of dents or scratches.

Book rating: Wow! This was my first Dark Academia book, and it’s safe to say that I will be reading more in the future. This book was so elegantly narrated, filled with such beautiful proses and writing that I can’t stop reading about it. I told myself “I’ll just read one scene and then I’ll go to bed” but couldn’t put it down near the end and had to finish it in one sitting. And the ending...just wow. First five star read in a while!

1.0 out of 5 starsSloppy, lazy writing (and WAY too many brackets)
Reviewed in Canada on January 6, 2022
Normally I don't post reviews but Amazon won't let me return this book so I'm annoyed and I'm going to vent it here.

I thought I would love this book because I love "dark academia" (The Secret History is one of my favorites), and it's about a group of university students attending some prestigious, secluded art school that inexplicably only teaches Shakespeare in their acting department, as if there aren't other playwrights...ok. Basically a degree from this school is useless then. And then a murder happens etc etc.

First off, this author should have co-credited Shakespeare as the author of this book because a good 40% of all the writing is just quotes from his plays. I guess it's not plagiarism when the writing is past its 100 year copyright timeframe...

Another thing she does that's super annoying is clarify everything with brackets as if the readers are too dense to understand the "clever" nuance of her writing. Alternatively, she uses brackets without any reason? Like she will bracket pieces of text even though they are not asides at all. Here are some examples:

1. "The Castle was crammed with people, some drinking, some dancing, sparkling in their party clothes. (The boys didn’t look too terribly different from usual—only better dressed, better groomed—but the girls were hardly recognizable. Night had fallen, and with it came short slinky dresses and dark mascara and satin lipstick, transforming them from mere girls to a coven of bewitching nocturnal creatures.)"

Bewitching nocturnal creatures?? Skuseeeme?? It's just lazy writing in my opinion. It also makes no sense because the girls are constantly being sexualized through the whole book but then in this description they're described as "mere girls"?

2. "Alexander proffered an imaginary blade (we didn’t have props yet) and tore the neck of his shirt open."

Yeah…we can guess they didn’t have any props…there’s no reason to include that bracketed part. Trust your reader!

3. “She’s right,” James said, blithely. “I’m sure-as-fuck not.” (Unlike the rest of us, who were all attracted to Meredith in some biological, unavoidable way, James seemed to find her overt sex appeal somehow repulsive.)

FIND A WAY TO SHOW THIS. Stop telling us! It’s lazy writing!

Instead of doing the work to develop characters or a deep sense of atmosphere, she just puts everything into bracketed asides as if that helps lol.

The characters are all one-dimensional tropes: the vixen, the waif, the gay one, the hot mysterious one, the jokester, etc. Like that is their personality. Also, all of the girls are "pick me"/"I'm quirky and not like other girls" girls, and the main character is SUCH a "nice guy". There's a lot of slut shaming and a disturbingly tone deaf depiction of an eating disorder.

They also all talk at each other in Shakespeare in full quotes because that's normal?

This is more of a nit-picky thing but the overall structure of the school made no sense to me. Each year, students get eliminated if they're not good enough to go to the next year, so by the final year there's literally 6 students...how does this school sustain itself financially?? It also doesn't seem like this school guarantees you any great acting career because the characters talk about how hard it is to get acting jobs...so what is the point of this school then? Also can you imagine going through/paying for 3 years of university only to be told you're not good enough to go to 4th year just because some acting coach didn't like your Othello?!?

3.0 out of 5 stars Rather (re)read The Secret History

If you’re a fan of TSH then I wouldn’t recommend this book. You will just be continually reminded of how brilliant TSH is and feel let down by this weak copycat. The characters are insipid, the plot is threadbare and the Shakespeare quotes are just annoying. If you haven’t read TSH and aren’t very demanding you might enjoy this lightweight soapie.

1.0 out of 5 stars Pretentious rip off

This is like own brand supermarket cola, nowhere near as good as the real thing. It’s a clear copy of The Secret History: posh American college, a clique of pals and their historic exclusive studies, a mysterious death, a protagonist who is both far more normal and accessible than the rest of them and who handily acts as the fall guy. Unfortunately it was so pretentious and full of crashingly obvious metaphor that I gave up half way through.

I feel this book should have been marketed to the YA audience, certainly not adults. Nothing of interest or quality for a discerning reader.

2.0 out of 5 stars Only for Shakespeare afficionados

Immature drama students and four years of studying Shakespeare, characters whose only character is that penned by the Master, whose dialogue struggles to depart from the script; real lives whose tragedies reflect the essence of their art: 'If we were Villains' reverses the role of the method actor as the world becomes the stage for twisted webs of Shakespearean villainy.

For students of the bard, this tale may encourage new reflections and insights, discover connections between studies and students. For the average reader, it will likely leave them cold. For me it was a struggle to continue to each next page - and to read the current page. The pages full of Shakespeare I tended to skim - perhaps that is why I did not end up coming to a real understanding of any of the characters. Certainly none of them was likeable, nor could I identify with any of them or understand their motivations. Unfortunately there was also no growth or development in the characters, rather than being fleshed out they were caractured through the words of the playwright.

The plot was a very thin thread revealed in two timezones. The first dimension to the novel is postrelease - the prisoner confessing his innocence to the detective turned priest. The second dimension is the saga of villainy, the twisted relationships among the seven starcrossed students, the tragedy, the mystery, the revelation. But there is little to reveal, neglgible shock, little disgust, minimal emotion, scarce logic, no reason to have actually reached the end.

Recommended only to students of Shakespeare - preferably American and twentyish... and then only because of the subject matter and discursion, not because of any literary merit or storytelling art.

1.0 out of 5 stars not my cup of tea
Reviewed in Italy on April 14, 2022

I've just finished reading The Secret History little brother: another elite group of students obsessed this time not over beauty and classical studies but from reaching artistic perfection through the theatre, more precisely from Shakespeare's plays; some passages of his most popular works are reported in the book as well. I've found the quoting and the play dialogues interesting, a person passionate about theatre would appreciate that.

I'd have been more emotionally invested in the characters if only I've got the reasons of their characteristic behaviour way before. I didn't feel a real connection with them nor between them, their relationships are mild and not strong enough to pay for someone's else mistakes, in my opinion. I do believe though, there is a lot of potential in this novel, wasted unfortunately, but it's just M.L.Rio's first novel after all. I'm expecting a lot from her in the nearly future.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dull and predictable

I thought it would never end! It was so dull and predictable. The overuse of Shakespeare quotes in day to day conversations and the lack of depth of any of the characters made it tedious to read.

Every supposed plot twist was extremely predictable. There were some interesting parts (like the Halloween play) but they were not well developed.

I was so excited to read this book but it was a disappointment. I almost DNF but I forced myself to finish it.

Almeno a me. Troppo lungo, e troppo facile fare un libro di successo saccheggiando Shakespeare.
