This Packer series is great for gospel-centered studying. The questions are thought-provoking and the notes in each chapter are excellent for connecting the passage to the bigger picture of Scripture. There is a good amount of space for writing on most questions, but not a lot of blank space at the end of the chapters for prayer requests, extra notes, etc., so if you're an avid note-taker like me, you may still need to supplement with your own paper for notes.
The study for James is well thought out and broken down. You get a 10 or so verse study each section.Very good for a facilitator running a bible study.Very good incite to the mind of Jesus's brother James.Study is more geared for medium level believers I think so fits most people who love our savior. Much more to James then I ever knew. I'm totally enjoying every good moment in this study.
The study guide is detailed and really encourages reflection of James' teachings. Each bible study of the book has excerpts entitled 'Gospel Glimpses,', 'Whole- Bible Connections,' and 'Theological Soundings.' I find these excerpts to be helpful and informative because they relate the book of James to the bigger picture of what the Bible is about.
I was hoping for a great study since J.I. Packer's name is on this as the Theological Editor. There is no problem with it theologically, but in my opinion, the questions are not very well thought out. Some questions were so simple that they need not be included. Others were off on a tangent and not in line with the lesson. There were several places that questions were repeated but worded differently which was somewhat frustrating. I would love to give this 5 stars to match my original enthusiasm, but unfortunately I cannot.
As a group we liked the parts of James that were covered, unfortunately the questions were worded horribly, they were redundant and not extremely thought provoking. We as a group spent more time discussing what was wrong with the questions and what was meant than anything that would help us grow in our knowledge and walk.
