Deacon Cole and the rest of Patrol Easy hoped that they had seen their last combat for a while, but they soon find themselves in the first wave during the invasion of the Philippines in October 1944. They witness the bold military leader General Douglas MacArthur wading ashore even as Japanese bullets still fly. After taking the beach, they return to Hill 522 to help knock out the enemy bastion there. Deke soon joins a patrol fighting its way across Leyte island in an effort to link up with US forces that have a toehold on the opposite shore.
All that stands between Deke and the American outpost are miles of jungle, mountains, monsoon rains, fanatical Japanese troops, and an enemy sniper with a grudge. What could go wrong?

Each book of the 3 book series was very well written, researched and it’s characters were not only well developed but quite ‘human’. ( hopefully more to come). The 3rd book, I think is best of all for action, adventure and for showing that war is never the way to resolve anything as most of the young are asked to go in harms way, often to make the ultimate sacrifice. The book is definitely not preachy but through the factual numbers of soldiers killed one can see the waste that war brings to all.

Helps me see what my dad saw

I know this is fiction, but there is a lot of history in it, too. David, one thing you didn't know was that the troop carriers circled until the USA flag was planted on the shore. That was MacArthur's order. The Filipino guerrillas' pay would begin when the US took the islands. That was handled by the flag. My dad, who worked with Gen. Eichenberger, was the captain assigned to plant the flag. But he was stymied by one of his men frozen on the rope ladder. While he climbed down to the soldier, a Japanese plane came flying straight to the ship. Dad said he could see the pilot's face. My dad grabbed the side rope and zoomed down to the carrier. He had witnessed what may have been the first kamikaze attack. Other things you wrote of verified what he told me, the beauty of the islands, the insects, the birds. I found this book interesting and the main characters compelling. What puzzles me to this day is why most Nisai were sent to Europe rather than the Pacific, where their bilingual skills were needed.

Tale of the Leyte battles as seen through a squad of soldiers made for a better understanding of some of the gory details of the campaign beyond the historical telling. The ending was abrubt but left you looking for the next issue.

Excellent story about a Sniper unit fighting in the jungles of Leyte in the Philippines. General McArthur has kept his promises and returns to the Philippines now Deke and Easy squad have to clear it of Japanese troops one shot at a time.

Good story

Healey has written another good story on the fictional tale of Deacon Cole a sniper and mountain man in the Pacific theater in WW II. Well written and hard to put down as the story moves along. Another good tale by the author.
