There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
A lighter roast doesn't extract as easily, therefore a finer grind gives a lot more flavour. (too fine isn't ideal either - based on brewing method).
If you try this - play around with grind and quantity of bean per water volume. You may be surprised.
Also - you can kill this with sugar IMO (and personally I dislike anything - dairy or sugar). At LEAST try a bit before you decimate it - hehe
I typically prefer light roasts - and I mostly do my own roasting. Waiting for a part, I tried this and often buy it when I'm too lazy to do my own.
I started with dark roasts because I always preferred them - but that changed. I find lighter roasts don't stay fresh as long - therefore in the past I found they were tasteless because they were always past their prime when the major brands hit the shelves. Smaller companies tend to get them there fresher (don't like to carry large stock in warehouses - it costs money) .....
Anyway - while I still use darker roasts for espresso, for drip, pour, french and even Moka sometimes - I definitely prefer light roasts - the right bean and grind can be amazing.
However, the past year or so, the flavor has changed. I thought it might be the beans, but now think it is the roasting process. It has become harsher, stronger, deeper, "more roasted" (if that's a coffee term). It doesn't have the burnt flavor of that famous "green mermaid" brand, but it's close. Sadly, too close for me. I don't like the "green mermaid" coffees: they taste burned, too strong, even stale, like the coffee has sat on the stove too long (which isn't the case, of course). But if you like that taste, this will appeal to you. Sadly, I've had several bags of what I call "the new Kicking Horse", and so I know it wasn't just one "off" bag or just one batch over-roasted. So I won't be drinking it anymore, but that shouldn't stop others.
Has some really nice nutty chocolatey flavors come through when French pressed.
I also used it in my espresso machine and it comes out well.
For those who like a lot of bite in their mouth I recommend French pressing and once it has cooled refrigerate for a morning cold brew

Now let me say that I'm not a coffee snob or purist. I don't drink shots right from the espresso machine with no sweetener etc. I freely admit that my coffees are mostly lattes. So a double shot of espresso into a steamed pitcher of milk to give me a 12 ounce drink. And yes, I use a packet of "pink" sweetener in it. Gasp, shock, horror!
Even so, with other decafs I've tried I either missed the nice deep coffee flavor (tasted like watered down milk or as my spouse says "mop water" although unsure when they had previously tasted mop water for a point of reference) or you could tell they were acidic and left that fruity acidic twang flavor in your mouth. Not for me!
I decided to give this coffee a try. All I can say is I'm glad I did. Back is my actual deep coffee flavor. No acidic after taste or apricot taste while drinking. This gives a nice roasted dark flavor that I can actually feel like I'm drinking coffee again. Like the old days before caffeine and I had to sadly wave farewell to each other.
I get hints of chocolate and caramel flavor. A bold type taste if that makes sense.
Now keep in mind how I drink my coffee. So, works perfect for me in that realm. I can't comment on how it would be straight out of the espresso machine. Might be too strong in that way, I don't honestly know as that is not and has never been how I drink my coffee.
All I can say is that I've found my coffee FINALLY! Already through the first bag and have another on its way as I write this.
If you are like me and don't like that apricot, fruity, acidic or weak decaf that seems to be all over then give this a try. I hope you like it as much as I do.

I tasted it side by side with Don Pablo Columbian decaf, Trader Joe's French Roast decaf, and a local roaster's SWP. For my tastes (I like it very dark), it's better than the Trader Joe's, about the same as my local roaster, but noticably lacking the complexity and richness of the Don Pablo. Considering that it's almost double the cost of Don Pablo, I'm confident in striking this one from my list of contenders.

Pros: good quality, fresh beans.
Con: might be too sweet for people that like espresso
I am a big espresso fan and usually aim to try new flavors out there. Kicking Horse has been always on my mind when purchasing beans but I can't recall the last time I actually did. So, when I ran out of my personal batch, I decided to give them a try. I love medium roasts, although most of the ones I get are usually light because I prefer the bitter/acidity taste for my specialty drinks (mix with milk). Nevertheless, I wanted to try the Cliff Hanger medium roast and see if I would like it.
Beans: the beans are oily and fresh in the packaging, and smell delicious
Espresso: straight up pulled shot, the Cliff Hanger is aromatic and gives off (to me & my nose) a light taste of dark chocolate. It is sweet to the taste and acidity levels are minimum.
Macchiato: I think this is where this bean shines! A macchiato with the Kicking Horse tastes heavenly! There is a sweet spot for any bean and I think this is it!
Cappuccino: I do enjoy sweet cappuccinos, but do have to say the coffee is a little distant in this mixture
Latte: I feel like this blend is too "smooth" for lattes and gets lost in the milk
Overall: I think the Kicking Horse is a great bean if you want to use it for espressos, macchiatos or cappuccino. If you are an avid latte drinker and like the coffee taste, this might be on the lighter side for you.
