As a cartography student, Jak has always dreamed of finding the lost dragon gate and exploring and mapping distant worlds.
Developing magical powers and becoming a powerful wizard? Not a chance.
Wizards are cruel and inhumane, warring with each other from their great sky cities and keeping most of humanity enslaved. Jak wants nothing to do with them.
But when he and his archaeologist mother unearth the gate, they attract the attention of the very wizards they sought to avoid. Even more troubling, Jak starts developing magical powers of his own, powers that could rival those of the great rulers.
Fate may have given him the opportunity to change the world.
But the wizard rulers don’t like change, and when they detect threats, they send their elite assassins to eliminate them.
If Jak can’t unlock the power of the gate, and the powers within himself, the world will remain enslaved forever.

Lindsay Buroker has got to be one of the best authors around. Her style, sense of humour, constant action, hint of romance and 'can't put the book down' is present in every book she has written and
I have read them all. The only downside is waiting for the next book!!!!
Can't recommend her enough - you won't be disappointed!

I have been a long time fan have read all of her books as well some of the ones under her other pen name. This by far the most boring and simple plot book. I will not waste my time on the next one in this series. Sorry Lindsay but I do not see were you put much effort into this book.

Lindsay Buroker doesn’t disappoint in this epic new series. Her Quirky one liners always entertain and this new imaginative twist to a dragon tale had me hooked from the start.

A lot of procrastination for little action.

The trouble with books that go to make a long series is that there can be a tendency to spin things out and no real imperative to get on with the story. What I liked about the story is the brutality of the mages (they are really quite vile, and without any real redeeming features), and the promise of dragons. What i didn't like was the long, drawn out battles which just acted as fillers, and the set up for yet another long series in which we will likely spend lots of time travelling from pillar to post with minimal plot advancement in each book. Lindsay Buroker used to be one of my favourite, go-to reads, but her most recent stuff Is not exciting, and I'm almost bored before we start. I'm not sure if I'll read the next one. I think I'd like fewer books in the series, and more concentrated and quality story-telling.

Just finished the last book in this 6 book fantasy series. Another fantastic series by Lindsay Buroker. She knows how to write characters you love and really get invested in. I can recommend everything she writes, so if you haven't discovered her yet, pick the series that most appeals and dive in. She writes Sci-fi, Fantasy, Urban Fantasy, even has a Steampunk series, and she has a large back catalogue to get your teeth into if you become a fan!

Good book, surprising series inconsistencies
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on October 10, 2022Verified Purchase
I love Lindsay’s books and have read all of them. This book is good …as are the others in the series, but the series as a whole has a surprisingly large number of inconsistencies. Lindsay is normally immaculate in that regard and I actually felt the start of the series was her at her best but this series eventually has quite a few inconsistencies, including some big ones which is disappointing so I’m deducting a star (although for the series rather than this book).

Very interesting and engaging story

I found this story very appealing from the start. It drew me into its dark and light and I was compelled to read more and more.
Seriously tho, it's a great story about an artefact that causes a fair bit of trouble, and a mother and son archaeologist pair who are trying to understand it.
This is a great book for those who like mystery, and magic. I definitely recommend it.

The start of another excellent adventure
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on May 4, 2021Verified Purchase
Quirky academics, daring mercenaries, pompous mages, flash bangs, and the hint of dragons; this story promises to combine all that has been most excellent in Lindsay Buroker’s earlier books into another thrilling and fast-paced fantasy action adventure.
A host of engaging characters, fantastic world-building, excellent storytelling and the usual humorous interludes and touches of down-to-earth observations that make her books so gritty and compelling.
Highly recommended. Can’t wait for more :D
