About the Author

Christopher Denise spent much of his childhood in Shannon, Ireland, exploring castles and dreaming of great adventures. He is the illustrator of many critically acclaimed books for young readers, including Anika Aldamuy Denise’s Bunny in the Middle, Alison McGhee’s Firefly Hollow, Rosemary Wells’s Following Grandfather, and Anne Marie Pace’s Groundhug Day, as well as several in Brian Jacques’s award-winning Redwall series. His books have appeared on the Indie Next List and the New York Times bestseller list and in the Society of Illustrators’ Annual Exhibition. Knight Owl marks his author-illustrator debut. Christopher’s current adventures include exploring coastal Rhode Island, where he lives with his family.

Christopher Denise is an award-winning children's book illustrator and visual development artist. His first book, a retelling of the Russian folktale The Fool of the World and the Flying Ship, was pronounced "a stunning debut" by Publishers Weekly. Since then, Chris has illustrated more than twenty books for children, including Alison McGhee's Firefly Hollow, Rosemary Wells' Following Grandfather, Phyllis Root's Oliver Finds His Way, his wife Anika Denise's Bella and Stella Come Home and some in Brian Jacques' acclaimed Redwall series. Knight Owl, by Christopher Denise, highly regarded illustrator turned author, is the tale of a young owl who aspires most passionately to become a knight. He tells himself that "He would be brave. He would be clever. And he would have many friends." Owl achieves his dream of becoming a knight just as older, larger, more experienced knights are mysteriously disappearing throughout the kingdom. Will Owl, too, be challenged by this danger out of the dark? Will he respond with courage, cleverness and--but what part could friendship play amidst great peril?

I would have bought the book just to look at the illustrations. They are wonderful! The colors are rich and dark, as befits a tale that takes place mostly at night (Owl is assigned to the Knight Night Watch). And you will rarely see anything as appealing as this little owl, barrel-shaped in his armor and with his huge most expressive golden eyes peering out from under his helm.

I purchased the book as a present for some grand nieces and nephews--but I think I'll keep it. I will buy another copy for them. Owl, with his courage, cleverness, and charm, is now a favorite character of mine. I want to keep him around.

This book is, I think, a wonderful bedtime story for ages three to seven.

I also plan to look for other books written and/or illustrated by Christopher Denise.

I thought the illustration was absolutely beautiful, It got great reviews and I love owls. I did not read the whole thing & i wasn’t sure if my little great niece would like it, but because the illustration was so beautiful and it got the good review I sent it anyhow. My niece it’s not quite two years old but her parents and her grandparents read to her all the time. They don’t watch TV while she’s awake so she’s always picking up books for them to read. I wasn’t sure if this book was too old for her but I did want her to have it in her library when she got a little bit older. My sister just messaged me and told me that my little grand niece had her mom read it three times just last night.

In "Knight Owl," Christopher Denise serves as author and illustrator (he was previously known only as an illustrator). This delightful story recounts the charming and heartwarming tale of a young owl who has dreamed of being a knight ever since he hatched. His tiny size and nocturnal habits, however, initially seem to be impediments to his ambition. Nonetheless, he perseveres, attends knight school, and uses his intelligence and wit to achieve his long-sought goal. His opportunity to prove himself worthy of protecting the castle comes when he's assigned to the duty of guarding the castle wall -- a job made all-the-more important and necessary when knights begin to disappear. One night, a dragon appears at the castle and plans to eat the little owl. Using humor and his wit, he convinces the dragon to eat pizza instead. Knight owl and the dragon are later joined by a host of little dragons and another knight, all of whom becomes friends. From that point on, no more knights disappear from the castle. This truly charming story for children four-to-eight years old, which is extremely well-written and beautifully illustrated, proves that intelligence, wit, and friendship are characteristics that are just as valuable as brawn and strength. Very highly recommended!

Very sweet book about being brave and making friends in unexpected places.

With children's books, the words themselves are obviously important, but often more important is something that's pleasant to look at. You can always add more to a story you are reading aloud if the artwork is detailed enough for you to riff on and interesting enough for kids to want to look at, and this book has charming, vibrant art throughout that I imagine most kids will enjoy looking at over and over again.
