A lifelong pursuit of knowing God should embody the Christian's existence. According to eminent theologian J.I. Packer, however, Christians have become enchanted by modern skepticism and have joined the "gigantic conspiracy of misdirection" by failing to put first things first. Knowing God aims to redirect our attention to the simple, deep truth that to know God is to love His Word. What began as a number of consecutive articles angled for "honest, no-nonsense readers who were fed up with facile Christian verbiage" in 1973, Knowing God has become a contemporary classic by creating "small studies out of great subjects." Each chapter is so specific in focus (covering topics such as the trinity, election, God's wrath, and God's sovereignty), that each succeeding chapter's theology seems to rival the next, until one's mind is so expanded that one's entire view of God has changed. Author Elizabeth Eliot wrote that amid the lofty content Packer "puts the hay where the sheep can reach it--plainly shows us ordinary folks what it means to know God." Having rescued us from the individual hunches of our ultra-tolerant theological age, Packer points the reader to the true character of God with his theological competence and compassionate heart. The lazy and faint-hearted should be warned about this timeless work--God is magnified, the sinner is humbled, and the saint encouraged. --Jill Heatherly

Strongly recommend this book. It's simply written and easy to understand. Paul says we are to examine ourself to see if we are in the faith. This book does a good job at just that.

This book was a great benefit to my journey in faith. Packer does a great job on emphasizing it is not enough just to know of God, but one must KNOW him. It's about relationship not distant understanding. This book is all about application.
The closing chapters in particular are very convicting, I especially loved the chapter emphasizing how we are the very children of God, and all that means.
I very much see this as a book I will reread many times in the years to come.

Great learning but a hard read. I was lost at times with scientific and theology language and explanations. One thing I learned for sure is most human nature of asking God for things but not attempting to make necessary changes for growth or even dedicating time for meaningful prayer.

The book "Knowing God" which was written by Dr. J.I. Packer opens your mind and heart who God is. Dr. Packer passed away a few weeks ago but his teachings in that book remind the master-theologian is God Himself. As a Canadian Citizen, I will remember the late Dr. Packer who trusted God and what matters most is to obey and love God always.

A solid description about knowing God, reliable and faithful to Scripture. I bought this copy for my sister. My original copy has been read about 4 or 5 times over.

Just finished reading this, and some of the reading I found to be deep but at the same time yearning to go deeper. I am one who loves to read a good book more then once, and this is one of them. I only hope and pray, that other Christians will take the time to read this book and share it with other. Not many books of this caliber written today. love it

Beside the Bible this is my favourite book. It is a Christian Classic and should be read by all those who seek to know the God they worship. Beautifully written, Packers love of God shines out of every page. How can we love and serve God unless we come to know Him? This book, together with John Pipers "The Pleasures of God" and A W Pink's "The Attributes of God" are the only 3 books you need to give you a rich knowledge of you Lord. I cannot recommend this highly enough. I have read it many several times over the years and will be reading it many more.

Knowing God by J Packer

I read this book about 12 years ago and have purchased another copy to read again. It is well written in Packers knowledgable style designed to instil both truth and desire to follow and serve God in a way consistent with the great being he is. Thoroughly recommended, especially in this era when joy in the Lord without a much deeper relationship built upon biblical truth is sometimes evident. Knowing and understanding God by spending time reading and mediatating on bible passages read followed by seeing it personalised to become characterised in our life through prayer, Packer thus encourages a more satisfying experience to knowing God personally.

A classic!

There is nothing more important than knowing God but knowing him is not a simple thing and most of us need some help to get there. Packer delivers. This is a detailed account of who God is, what he expects from his children and how to get there. The relationship that is possible with our all-powerful, creator God is astounding. This is a small book but it delivers huge benefits.

Do You Really Know God

This is a book for mature Christians. I bought this book about 40 years ago and its been on my shelves that long but reading it now after 40 years experience in the Church I can now at last appreciate the value of this book. Not a book for the feint-hearted. Nothing wishy-washy about this book - its strong stuff or as is someyimez
