I can only recommend this book, by far the best lesbian themed book I've read this year, so basically the best book I've read as I don't read anything else. I highly recommend Ash as well which is completely different, but really good too. Very well written books, can't wait for her next one!

Set in the 1950;s when homosexuality was not accepted by society . and leaves one cheering for Lily and Kath throughout. Strangely erotic, without being overly graphic. A good read.

Malinda Lo is one of my favourite authors and I always anticipate her books coming out, but this novel hits on a different level. The story is poignant and powerful and I found the history very fascinating as someone who is neither Asian or American. It was eyeopening. I feel like Malinda has really honed her craft and it's demonstrated within this novel. Sad it's over so soon! Also Tommy *heart-eyes*

I will write a proper review at some point, but for now I just want to say how much I loved this novel. I appreciate that even though the story is fiction it is based upon very real attitudes and events that would have happened at the time.

The use of language and the inclusion of Chinese languages with translations in the footnotes adds a whole other layer to the novel.

Honestly it’s brilliant, I couldn’t put it down.

Wow. I am blown away by this book. I wasn’t expecting to feel so broken and torn by this story. It gave an incredible insight to queer communities in the 1950s and the experiences of lesbian Asian Americans during this period. It’s also very well written, despite being a little slow in parts, very detailed and is a heartfelt depiction of first love.

So gripping, and gives me the childlike butterflies I used to get as a kid. So much to learn from this book from Engineering to Chinese culture to LGBTQ+ to general American and Chinese history.

A well rounded and beautifully written novel that will make you laugh, cry and be on the edge of your seat, you won't want to put it down, but you also won't ever want this story to end.
