The beans are not pretty to look at. Noticeably, clearly, a lower quality, bottom shelf product to be served in large quantities at public cafes. The beans are fairly dry, not very pretty and lavazza doesn’t publish roast dates - it’s notorious for selling fairly old beans.
And yet this espresso turns out incredibly smooth, flavourful, rich coffee. And I mean as smooth as glass, and chocolatey delicious. I use it exclusively for straight espresso shots and the product is simply outstanding. Almost impossible to imagine when you compare the beans to something more expensive, but I guess that’s the magic.
Lavazza has nailed the blend and produced a value-sized, mass market coffee that’s consistently delicious. I invest in really good coffees, and they all have their nuances but this is easily in my top 2 for espresso, besting coffees that are 2-4x it’s price.
Speaking openly, this coffee is nothing special on paper, but the end product is nothing short of magnificent. I’m not complaining, these beans are super cheap, can be had for $10 CAD/ kg on sale sometimes and makes amaaaaaazing espresso.
I’m a big, big, big fan.
I know it's a lot fresher than the other stuff too because the amount of bloom / expansion you get when first pouring water over the grounds in a pour over brew barely foams up with the other coffee, but with the lavazza it actually expands up quite a bit. That off gassing slowly happens over time, or happens quickly when in hot water, old beans have no bloom, freshly roasted beans do.
If you need fresher than that then find someone locally who roasts and buy it from them...

I brewed in the AeroPress as follows: 96C water, 17g of coffee, 45s bloom, press at 2:00, top up with a very small amount of water, add a generous amount of milk. It is palatable enough that I will finish the bag using this method, but would not seek it out.
I brewed in a Chemex following the Stumptown guide to brewing, and found the coffee to be bad. This is definitely not suited for a drip, more for an AeroPress or stovetop espresso maker (Bialetti).
I will not be re-purchasing this.
The flavor is absolutely amazing! Hints of chocolate and caramel with a nice rich scent. This is absolutely my new usual coffee. Not only is it delicious, but it's affordable (a 1kg bag is comparable to a 1 lb bag if fancy coffee). The beans are also quite dry, which is great news for my grinder as anything oily has issues feeding from the hopper.
(I use an aeropress to make lattes.)
