Lavazza touts itself as Italy’s favourite coffee, but even amongst the massive mass-market brands, it’s regarded as notably lower quality than than others... that’s why this coffee is such a roller-coaster.
The beans are not pretty to look at. Noticeably, clearly, a lower quality, bottom shelf product to be served in large quantities at public cafes. The beans are fairly dry, not very pretty and lavazza doesn’t publish roast dates - it’s notorious for selling fairly old beans.
And yet this espresso turns out incredibly smooth, flavourful, rich coffee. And I mean as smooth as glass, and chocolatey delicious. I use it exclusively for straight espresso shots and the product is simply outstanding. Almost impossible to imagine when you compare the beans to something more expensive, but I guess that’s the magic.
Lavazza has nailed the blend and produced a value-sized, mass market coffee that’s consistently delicious. I invest in really good coffees, and they all have their nuances but this is easily in my top 2 for espresso, besting coffees that are 2-4x it’s price.
Speaking openly, this coffee is nothing special on paper, but the end product is nothing short of magnificent. I’m not complaining, these beans are super cheap, can be had for $10 CAD/ kg on sale sometimes and makes amaaaaaazing espresso.
