I have never watched these movies until now. I wondered what all the hype was about and thought I was too cool for LOTR. But I finally buckled and bought this extended set. amazing, astounding, enthralling, riveting are a few words I would use to describe this series. I understand why this is such a big deal to fantasy geeks. Its a must own.
Greatest movie ever. ****** and every thumbs up! But... The blu-ray extended editions have a noticeable green tint issue and it changes the looks of lots of scenes. Get the DVD extended editions for the original color pattern,
As others have mentioned the Blu-ray cases are very flimsy and the clips break very easily that made we wonder if this is a bootleg! However, the blu-ray quality is amazing and I have not seen any issues with the disc being played. For the price I am content with the purchase.
The Lord of the Rings series of movies is one of my favorites of all time. I already own DVD copies of all the movies however not Blu-ray. Although the condition of the box the cases and the discs seemed new, all three movies and all 6 discs had this issue so I would question how genuine these are. That said there is no visible scratches on any of the discs and the skips themselves are very small. Because of this I did not bother returning them and have enjoyed watching the movies several times since purchase
What to say about this one? Having bought all the theatrical releases, then the extended versions, after acquiring a blue ray player this was the obvious final purchase. After all I have 3 copies of the books, one fallen apart and completely unreadable from repeated readings and saved for sentimental value, one in one volume with the spine fallen off from use, and a good hardback set in 3 volumes looking only a little the worse from wear. Peter Jackson did such an incredible job bringing my favourite book to life.
I thought the extra 3 discs per movie was a little much at first, but I've just lately started watching them and they are very interesting. The "Behind the Scenes" for each is a little dry, but The Appendices 1-6 are very insightful: showing Tolken's past and how he came to writing the books, the actors talking to the camera telling us their personal stories, and the making of the movies themselves.
If you're thinking of buying the regular versions don't even bother. If you want to own The Lord of the Rings you should get the extended editions. It also comes with codes for iTunes so you can have each movie on your computer as well.
A Five Star adaption of a TEN STAR book, Jackson does an excellent job of adapting Tolkien's masterpiece to the big screen. There are a few ms-steps along the way, Gimli is too much of a comedian, Legolas is too much of a superhero, but by and large the movie series is a masterpiece. The extended edition is my choice over the theatrical versions, especially in "The Return Of The King".
I know some people will argue with me that Casablanca and Gone With The Wind (among others) should claim title of best movie but they would never enter my blu-ray player in the way LOTR consistently does - And that's a decade after owning these movies. Best soundtrack ever put to a set of movies as well. I'm still waiting for a movie franchise to even come close to the greatness of LOTR but it hasn't happened yet and I honestly don't expect it to in my lifetime or beyond.
An excellent set, featuring the extended editions (each movie on two discs) plus tons of bonus material. A bit annoying to switch discs in the middle of the movie, but SO WORTH IT to avoid compression or cut scenes. Perfect for the true LOTR fan!
Fantastic movies at a fantastic price. I purchased this set to replace the exact same set I previously owned, but one disc got jammed in the crummy Sony blu-ray player we had. This set is a replacement for that set, compliments of Sony for their product failure. Great movies that my daughters and I love.
