Falling in love is the ultimate payback in this delightful, breezy romcom about an interior designer who teams up with an enigmatic architect at her firm to get revenge on her ex the only way she knows how: by building a spite house next door
“Filled with sizzling chemistry and delicious revenge, Love at First Spite had me smiling from start to finish. This is one debut you don’t want to miss!” —Kate Bromley, author of Talk Bookish to Me
They say living well is the best revenge. But sometimes, spreading the misery seems a whole lot more satisfying. That’s interior designer Dani Porter’s justification for buying the vacant lot next to her ex-fiancé’s house…the house they were supposed to live in together, before he cheated on her with their Realtor. Dani plans to build a vacation rental that will a) mess with his view and his peace of mind and b) prove that Dani is not someone to be stepped on. Welcome to project Spite House.
That plan quickly becomes complicated when Dani is forced to team up with Wyatt Montego, the handsome, haughty architect at her firm, and the only person available to draw up blueprints. Wyatt is terse and stern, the kind of man who eats his sandwich with a knife and fork. But as they spend time together on- and off-site, Dani glimpses something deeper beneath that hard veneer, something surprising, vulnerable, and real. And the closer she gets to her goal, the more she wonders if winning revenge could mean losing something infinitely sweeter…
“Rollickingly, fast-paced… Fans of Emily Henry’s tales will enjoy Collins’ imaginative rom-com.” —Booklist
“Wyatt is the perfect grumpy romance hero with a heart of gold. An enemies-to-friends-to-lovers story that’s sure to delight rom-com fans.” —Kirkus Reviews

The title of this book is so perfect and clever. I mean, I was interested from that alone. Then, the book starts off with a hilarious scene of the MC, Dani, playing paintball in her wedding dress, on what was supposed to be her wedding day before she called it off. Thatβs a very strong start to a good book. Dani then starts βproject Spite Houseβ with her 2 best friends, on a lot next to her exβs house and it is everything you have ever dreamed of doing to spite someone who wronged you. Throw in a grumpy office enemy, some hilarious banter, and a doomed friends with benefits scheme- and you have a wonderful book. It was fast paced, witty and well written.

After breaking up with her cheating fiancΓ©, Sam, Dani wants revenge. Since her fiancΓ© didnβt buy the extra lot next door to their home like she asked him to, she decides to buy it along with her cousin and her new landlady. Dani decides the best way to get back at Sam is to build a rental home that will block the view he loves. To build the house, Dani asks her coworker, Wyatt, a serious and unfriendly architect, to help her draw up the blueprints. As they spend time together, Dani realizes Wyatt isnβt as unlikeable as he seemed. Dani doesnβt want the project to end, because then she wouldnβt have a reason to spend time with Wyatt. She has to prolong the project, and maintain her new relationship with Wyatt, before they both end in disaster.
This was a great enemies-to-lovers revenge story. There was also some forbidden romance, since Dani and Wyatt worked together and had to keep their romance a secret in the office. These were really well developed romance tropes.
The ending was suspenseful and thrilling. It was a little predictable, but still exciting. I wonβt give away what happened, but I think Daniβs goal of getting revenge had a satisfying ending.
Love at First Spite is a great revenge story!
Thank you HarperCollins for providing a copy of this book.

Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for the advanced copy of Love At First Spite.
I absolutely loved this book!! The opening sequence was such an interesting way to start a book and definitely pulled me in right away. The characters are so well written, the only thing I could have asked for was a Wyatt pov. Otherwise, this book was perfection. If you love Rom Coms then be sure to add this one to your TBR!!

Couldnβt connect with either of the main characters for some reason, didnβt feel as if there was much chemistry between them at all. The storyline was good and Iris and Mia seemed more interesting to me. Hence the low rating.

A Fun Romcom about Revenge!

When I saw this cover (and the title frankly) I knew I had to read it. Iβm a sucker for a good, illustrated cover and this one is totally gorgeous and eye catching! Not only that, but I also love a revenge theme in a romcom so I knew this would be the perfect book for me! Would I recommend it? Absolutely! Iβm actually surprised to see that the ratings here on goodreads are so low!
Right before her wedding Dani finds her fiancΓ© with the realtor. Swearing off all men and intent on a little revenge Dani decides to build a spite house so that she can give her ex a taste of his own medicine. What she doesnβt realize is that the architect she hires to oversee the building (also her co-worker who she doesnβt care for in the beginning) may just work his way into her jaded heartβ¦
I adored this romcom. While I wish it had a little more humor in it, I think itβs truly a great book to get lost in. Itβs a gem! Why? Because not only is it a lighthearted read but it has depth as the emotional issues Dani is facing come through the pages. Readers can feel her pain and understand her need to take the issues sheβs facing into her own hands. Not only that, but Wyatt is also a phenomenal male lead! I love how the author made him vulnerable through his Meniereβs disease. Authors who can make their characters realistic are ones I always come back to for more.

Temporary Fling, Revenge Plot, Workplace Romance
Reviewed in the United States πΊπΈ on March 28, 2022Verified Purchase
Love at First Spite is about Dani, an interior designer, trying to get back at her ex. To do so she buys a plot of land right behind her ex's house with a plan to build a tint home that will obstruct the beautiful views he has. But she'll need an architect and surprisingly her somewhat of an enemy co-worker volunteers to help. What could go wrong?
I really enjoyed this book. It was a fun, entertaining, and quick read that I struggled to put down and the chemistry between Dani and Wyatt was fantastic. The only issue I really had was some of miscommunication between the two of them. I get why the trope was used and I think it was used well, I just selfishly wanted them to be together faster.
I thought the plot was really unique and not something g I had read before. Not necessarily the revenge on her ex part, but how she was going about getting her revenge. I loved addition of Dani's best friend and landlady and the dogs as well.
Everything felt well throughout and developed. Definitely worth a read if you enjoy the following:
βοΈ Workplace Romance
βοΈ Temporary Fling
βοΈ Ex-Revenge Plot
βοΈ Miscommunication Trope
βοΈ Disability Representation
βοΈ Short Chapters
