This book provides 21 thinking routines that can be incorporated into lessons to engage students across curriculum areas and grade levels. Routines are well laid out and include their purpose, choosing content, steps for setting up the routine, suggestions for assessment and a picture of practice. The routines are easy to incorporate into a lesson or unit. Some student samples are included. Thinking routines are based on the premise that knowledge is constructed and students learn by connecting new ideas to their own thinking. New twists are added to familiar strategies to focus more on inquiry than learning facts and require students to dig deeper into their thinking. My students have enjoyed using a variety of the routines, especially Zoom In, Tug-of-War and Step Inside.

Keep the book in the classroom as you may need to refer to it until you've got used to using the routines. This concept is an essential addition to the material those of us who wish to transform education can use to create a new education system globally. Focusing on the thinking part of developing learners, a lot of the advice and examples given also apply to developing the learner in general - in fact the book could be called 'Making Learning Visible' (I did suggest this once at a talk by the author). It is an inspiration and has wonderful examples and case studies for the working teacher.
