Ellen Weiss has written lots and lots of books for kids, from board books to chapter books to middle-grade novels, fiction and nonfiction, silly and serious. They have won many awards, and have been adapted into a Disney TV movie and a BBC radio play. Two of them, THE TAMING OF LOLA and PORKY AND BESS, were named Bank Street Best Books of 2010. She loves to collaborate, and she often writes with her husband, Mel Friedman. She also loves to rescue stray dogs, but she had to stop when the aforementioned Mel Friedman told her he would divorce her if she brought home one more filthy, un-housebroken, weird mutt.

This is a cleverly written, beautifully illustrated book about how a family got one cat -- that soon became a dozen cats. The small reader loves matching cats with their names and counting them.
Whimsical, imaginative and fun. Children who love cats will love the story.

A surprise favorite of my 3 year old

As always I was unsure of the response this would get from my three year old. After countless readings it has become one of his favorite books. He loves to laugh at the silly cats and consistently renames a couple of his favorites. It's just repetative enough to keep him coming back but always seems to be a surprise for him. I enjoy reading it to him often and find the nearly poetic text original enough to hold my interest. A great book, I would like to find more like it.

My oldest son and I fell in love with this cat story 2 years ago and now share it daily with his younger brother. They love the rhyme, count the cats, and repeat the phrases. It's timeless and ageless, since every cat-household knows that the felines adopt us - usually when we don't expect it!

I bought this book as a baby shower gift for my cousin; they requested signed books in lieu of cards which is a great idea! This was my sister's absolute favorite book when she was little, my parents and I read this to her multiple times each night before bed. I even had this book memorized when I was like 8 years old from reading it so often! It's such a great children's book and it was fun reading it again!

We received this book as a hand-me-down from friends over 10 years ago. It has remained a family favorite. Even though this book was written many years ago, the rhymes and the illustrations are charming. After each new cat's addition, the story retells itself in a repeating pattern similar to "The 12 Days of Christmas" which makes it easy for children to remember. Both may daughters like the story--so much so that my older daughter refused to give up the hand-me-down copy--she wants to keep it to read it to her children! So I bought this one from Amazon--I was worried that the illustrations would have changed because it had a different cover, but I was happy to discover that the original drawings have been kept!

If you like animals and rhyming books, this book is a winner!!

I read this book in elementary school, and now I am 24. This is one of my favorite books of all time! I loved this book so much that I even purchased a copy for the Blind Cat Rescue and Sanctuary Inc., so that more cat lovers can experience the wonderful story-telling that this book brings! As a person that never only wanted to have one cat at a time so they won't get lonely, this book brought joy to me in it's cheerful and funny rhymes. I loved reading about the background of each cat, and how they all eventually found a home together. My only complaint is that I wish they had more cats! At any rate, this is a wonderful book to pick up for either yourself, children, a fellow cat lover, or even just someone looking for a short, and humorous read!
