Jenny Tanner opens the box she has cherished for decades. Contained within are her most precious mementoes, amongst them a pebble, a carving and a newspaper cutting she can hardly bear to read. But Jenny knows the time is finally here. After the war, in a mountainside village in Italy, she left behind a piece of her heart. However painful, she must return to Cinque Alberi. And lay the past to rest.
After a troubled upbringing, Candice Barnes dreams of a future with the love of her life - but is he the man she believes him to be? When Candice is given the opportunity to travel to Italy with Jenny, she is unaware the trip will open her eyes to the truth she's been too afraid to face. This was a good story based part in current day and part historical. My issues with it were that the chapters were very short and each told from either young Jenny’s perspective, old Jenny’s perspective or Candice’s perspective. The dates at the beginning of the chapter distinguishes which was the historical part and which the modern but both Candice and older Jenny were not distinguished by their names at the beginning of their chapters in the modern story so sometimes I’d be reading thinking that bit was about Jenny and realising it was Candice and vice Versa. To make it more confusing, sometimes these protagonists perspectives were in the same chapter! It made the story quite disjointed.
It also took Jenny and Candice a long time to actually get to Italy, there was a lot of build up. It would have been better if more of Jenny’s story had been told whilst they were there to give more atmosphere to the story. It was hard to like any of the characters for a long time, Candice was very naive and young Jenny very selfish and old Jenny a bit dull. In the end though it did redeem itself and I came to like Jenny. I liked the few twists that came towards the end too. Overall a good story, just a bit of a slow burner and not as good as her other books, all of which I’ve read and thoroughly enjoyed!
