About Mika Mayen
Originally from Indonesia, Mika Mayen is a children’s book author. She is also a full-time interior designer in Toronto, Canada, where she lives with her husband, Erick, a five-year-old son, Hendrick, and their Maine-Coon cat, Don Julio.
As a designer, she specializes in restaurant and retail design and freelances as a food photographer. These bring together some of her greatest loves; art, design, and food! As for other passions, she and her husband love to cook, garden and travel in their leisure time. Of course, this all flows nicely into their love of entertaining friends and family, which they tend to prepare for by watching copious hours of food shows on TV!
She spends her free time daydreaming and coming up with ideas, scenarios and stories. Her books are designed to delight and, in the case of children’s literature, to reassure and entertain. Crafting and creating character and plot is her real passion, and she hopes all who read the fruits of her daydreaming find themselves very engaged.

in a village far away…
in a year long before this one…
a curious-looking man, dressed all in red, arrived at a small village by the sea.
He was there, not to cause trouble, but to stop it.
The village had been terrorised by a hideous sea beast for centuries.
It was this man’s quest to put a stop to it once and for all.
What do you think this story is all about?
Perhaps it’s about battles, monsters, mystery and the sea.
If you thought that, you wouldn’t be wrong.
But it is also, and maybe most importantly, about the origin of the festival we call the Lunar New Year.
This book is an entertaining romp through the mysterious legend of Nian, the sea beast, and the curious-looking man in red who scared him away forever. Not many people in the west know of this origin story, and this retelling offers an exciting and mysterious journey through the myth attached to the Lunar New Year festival. As a bonus, it not only retells the tale but also educates its audience about how people across the world celebrate it today.
Order now to have your child learn about the lucky red and the tale of the Lunar New Year!
