As the year draws to a close, I look back on the trail of reading I’m leaving behind. A dozen landmarks along the way stand out: The Complete Stories of Leonora Carrington; Sam Shepherd’s Motel Chronicals; Celeste Stacy Mohamed’s much lauded Pleasantview; The Grand Biocentric Design by Robert Lanza MD; Ginna Gordon’s Bear Me Away to a Better World: the Tale of a Duo, the Power of Music, and a Chandelier; Frank De Luca’s Kindness: a Guide for Humans Based on the Enneagram; the novels of Haruki Murakami; Fantastic Women: Surreal Worlds from Meret Oppenheim to Frida Kahlo, edited by Ingrid Pfeiffer. But none resonate for me so much as A. J. Verdelle’s Miss Chloe: a Memoir of Literary Friendship With Toni Morrison. Miss Chloe is a moving tribute to the greatness of Morrison as a writer and a human being, and a chronicle of their twenty-plus years of friendship. If you are a fan of Morrison, or of Verdelle, or of both, you will become acquainted with them at a deeper level. It was my privilege to have had my thesis read by A.J. at Lesley U. in 2015. We shared a few hours and a few drinks and some conversation. You think you know someone based on fleeting moments, then discover you didn’t, really. Read Miss Chloe and be prepared to know its author in a new way.
But more than a chronicle of friendship, Miss Chloe offers an unprecedented glimpse into the craft of writing, and the writing life. I came away proud and humbled to share a vocation with Morrison and Verdelle, however much in their shadows. Put Miss Chloe on your reading list in 2022 and be enriched.
