Aspiring novelist Molly MacGregor’s life is strikingly different from a literary heroine’s. Named for one of literature’s least romantic protagonists, Moll Flanders, Molly lives in Edmonton, a city she finds irredeemably unromantic, where she writes university term papers instead of novels, and sells shoes in the Largest Mall on Earth. There she seeks the other half of her young life’s own matched pair.
Delightfully whimsical, Heidi L.M. Jacobs’ Molly of the Mall: Literary Lass and Purveyor of Fine Footwear explores its namesake’s love for the written word, love for the wrong men (and the right one), and her complicated love for her city.

I loved this book as it took me right back to my life as a grad student at the University of Alberta (where the main character studies) in a city i loved (Edmonton) and reminded me of my many trips to the West Edmonton Mall (a key location in this book). I even sold shoes as i worked my way through university! Besides being able to relate to this character in her setting the author’s writing is warmly personal, wry, contains many apt literary references to enliven her story (the key one being Molly Flanders) and very, very funny. I look forward to seeing her next book.

Superb! Very clever and funny! A modern take on a classic..but set in Edmonton, Canada, which makes it all the more humorous. One of the best reads in quite awhile.

From the moment I met Molly, I was hooked. This book is brilliantly written, humorous, and truly a literary delight. Loved it and can't wait to read it again.

As a novel in situation, I believe Molly of the Mall explores both interior and exterior local geography in wonderful ways. No argument for sure.

This is an excellent read.
It brought back memories of university. A great coming of age. I laughed out loud.

VINE VOICE
This is a charming novel set in 1995 about a 20 year old English major at the U of A, who loves Jane Austen and who works part time at a shoe store at WEM. The author's nostalgic love for the city of Edmonton shines through the narrative, so if you're from there, you will enjoy seeing the city, WEM, and the U of A campus through Molly's eyes. Gentle humour and a satisfying romance make this story a delight to read.
