This is such a sweet story. I think it would be great for little girls who are showing more interest in boy toys, or little boys showing more interest in girl toys. As a kid who was like that myself, a story book like this would have been lovely to hear in school or from my parents and caretakers. I was a little worried the book would almost enforce gender roles by being so focused on a boy liking pink, but really kids don't think that deep, so it's a nice and simple way to explain those concepts to them or to make them more confident if they seem to be figuring out those concepts themselves. Would likely be better for kids above 5, cause there is a bit of story line to follow. There is a really nice part at the end showing lots of people who's shadows like things they may not usually like, so I included some photos of that cause I thought it was a really nice addition to the story.

I was worried this book might not be as good as I hoped, because another review said that it relied on stereotypes and specifically called out the part of the book that said “my shadow loves pink toys, princesses, fairies, not boy things”. But ‘Not for boys’ is in quotes, bold, and italics, suggesting this is an untrue statement rather than reinforcing stereotype. I’m glad I took the chance.
