1.0 out of 5 stars Damaged

I paid full price for a new copy and received a used/very damaged book.

The story itself is lovely! I’m just disappointed at the condition of the book itself.

I legitimately recommend this book anytime someone asks about a gift for 0 to 4. I absolutely adore the acceptance message, the colors, the creative drawings and everything about it

5.0 out of 5 stars My son LOVES this book, and I love the message

I'm trying to build my son's library of books that will grow him into a tolerant, accepting man - books about LGBTQIA, different races and ethnicities, books about strong women, etc.

This book is adorable. It's about being somewhere you don't fit in, and finding the people who will accept you just as you are. I feel like this book could be about so many different things - being bullied, peer pressure, being gay, being trans, being a boy who likes pink and sparkly things, etc. It's a wonderful book and I highly recommend it.

I’m non-binary. I’ve had some trouble with discussing this concept with my young children. This book gracefully allowed me to discuss this part of myself with my kids.
My daughter is still too young to understand but the simple ideas and beautiful illustrations of this book have laid the ground for more in depth conversation later.
It’s become one of our most loved books to snuggle up and read together.

5.0 out of 5 stars For anyone whose ever felt "different"
Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2018

This book is FANTATIC. It could be about trans issues or not. It is about the land of This and That where everyone is born either This (blue bunny) or That (yellow duck). When one of them is born part bunny, part duck they are excited to be “both.” But the others say they must be This or That and that they are not “both” but “neither.” Neither?!! They are very sad about the reframing from both to neither and they, with encouragement from the other inhabitants of the Land of This and That who say they do not belong, decides to find somewhere else to fit it. They find the Land for All where everyone is different and that is why they play together. They are amazed by this new social premise: rather than play with folks because they are the same as you, play with them because they are different from you! The last page shows an exodus from the Land of This and That to the Land of All which my child loves.

5.0 out of 5 stars A colorful celebration of difference that my son loves to read
Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2018

My (6yo) son loves this book and has read it every day since it arrived (aloud to us or to himself) and even started drawing his own spin-off book. This makes me very happy, while he is a voracious consumer of audiobooks, he is a reluctant reader at home. I ordered this and unpacked it but hadn’t had a chance to sit down and read it with him before he picked it up and read it himself and showed it excitedly to us.

The paintings are lush and candy-colored, but not overwhelming, so the story progresses without confusion. The accompanying text is simple enough for him to read with the emotions clearly communicated, and the ultimate message of inclusion is out loud and proud and fun, a celebration page with great joy in the diversity of all the different creatures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Artwork & Message to be Inclusive
Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2020

My kids (2 & 6) love this book. I can't read it enough for them and my 6 year old has started reading it for her friends and family. All the kids adore the beautiful artwork, colors and think the animals are the cutest. It's a book about individuality, celebrating our differences not punishing them and being inclusive. That you don't have to be "this or that" and we want to live in a world where everyone is welcome. If the negative reviews mean that this positive message is propaganda / hidden agenda, then yes it is. Now why wouldn't you want to share a message like that with your children? The world would be a better place if everyone can be so kind and accepting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Message for Kids ... and for All of Us

"Neither" is amazing and adorable. I love how "Neither" applies to everyone who has ever felt that they don’t belong in a certain group (haven’t we all felt that way at least once in our lives) And it also applies to everyone else to remind us all to be more open and welcoming to anyone who is “different” or doesn’t seem to fit in.
The illustrations are charming, fun and beautiful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely inclusive message
Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2018

This book is simple and fun with brightly colored and cute illustrations. A good message for all children. Where this story really shines and brings something different is when two characters who look at first glance like they fit the typical blue bunny/yellow bird dichotomy come to the more inclusive society and are welcomed. The message being not only is an inclusive society better for those who absolutely can't fit in elsewhere, it's also better for people with subtle or invisible differences who would otherwise make themselves fit in to the binary.

This is our favorite book, and the favorite book of anyone we share it with. The message is literally perfect. It can be applied to so many things my child wonders about or experiences. May we all be Neither and Both and anything we truly feel ourselves to be.
