A completely fresh approach to science for ages 4-8. I love this new style of Sylvia Long's. I grew up on her bunny books. We stumbled on to one of these books in library and it stuck with me. When my daughter's kindergarten teacher told me they were studying nests and they didn't have a books, I remembered them and went looking. Thank goodness people read books on youtube too. My only criticism is that this book would benefit from a glossary and index. Lovely writting and beautiful design. This series would also be great for gifting to adults.

This series is amazing. The books are high quality and provide information geared to children on the various topics featured in the books. The artwork in these books is detailed, beautiful and captivating for children and adults alike. When this series was used in our kindergarten class, the children enjoyed them very much and they led to different inquiries and ‘research’ projects. Beautifully written and illustrated!

Very beautiful book with the graphics. Daughter likes it. Will probably buy the rest of the series. The info is a bit complicated for a 3 years old to read on her own but she will grow into it.

Beautiful, but not engaging for young kids
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on June 20, 2022Verified Purchase
This book is really really beautiful, the pictures are absolutely stunning. It is a lovely treasure of a book. Unfortunately it seems to have missed the mark for the nature-loving kids (age 4 and 5) who repeatedly reject it as a choice for being read to, and they are not old enough to read the words for themselves yet. They much prefer simple story picture books, and do not find this engaging as there isn't a storyline. So I would say it is only suitable for ages 8 and up as a factual information book. I really wanted to buy every book in the series as they look so beautiful, but now I'm glad I didn't!

Poetic, informative text, lovingly illustrated.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on March 8, 2015Verified Purchase
A poetic, lovingly illustrated picture book that is full of fascinating information sure to be new to adult and young readers, alike. Who knew that army ants form 'living nests' to protect their eggs, or that orangutans braid beds of branches up in the rainforest canopy? The detailed pictures and text will reward multiple re-readings. I especially appreciate Dianna Hutts Aston's sophisticated (but never verbose) writing, as there is plenty of new vocabulary to discuss with young readers.
The hardcover edition is beautifully bound, and the large format is a pleasure. The earth-tone text and cursive headings compliment the illustrations sensitively. A perfect gift to welcome the spring.

Wonderful!

Used this book with my class who had a fascination with building nests. Beautiful illustrations and very informative. The children designed and made their own nests based on the ones in the book, made detailed sketches and made mini books and factfiles about the different kinds of nests. I would definitely recommend.
