Great book. My two-year-old really likes it, and I think we both appreciate the message that parents still love their children even when the child is in a foul mood. There is a great deal of tenderness and humor in the illustrations. I also like that the child and parent in the book aren't gendered or identified beyond "Small" and "Large," so any child can fill in any parental figure.

I didn’t think this book would be a huge hit after skimming through it before reading it to my daughter, but for some reason the context registers enough for her to ADORE it (she’s slightly over 2). She loves it and the message is so sweet.

Beautiful story - but not the version I remember...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on March 11, 2018Verified Purchase
I remember reading this story to my little sister when she was young, her nickname is in fact Small, largely due to the influence this book had on our lives. I read this book so many times that I know it by heart, so when I was thinking about books to add to my son's growing collection of bedtime stories this one was high on the list. However I was very disappointed to find the original ending has been changed!
Small: But what about when we're dead and gone? Will you love me then? Does love go on?
Large held Small snug as they looked out at the night, at the moon in the dark and the stars shining bright.
Large: Small, look at the stars, how they shine and glow. But some of those stars died a long time ago. Still they shine through the evening skies. Love, like starlight, never dies."
I think by removing the question about death, the author and/or publisher is doing their target audience a disservice. Death is a hard subject for children and adults alike, and these beautiful words eased the heart. I find the new lines don't scan so well, and don't wrap the book up as well.

Returned

It’s a sweet book but I returned it. Its about a mom consoling her baby that she will always love her, and the baby asks “ will you love me even after I die?” And the mom replies” look at the stars - they are all dead but still shine and my live for you will be eternal like them”.
The answer was sweet... BUT I bought it for my two year old who has NO CLUE about death and I don’t think a child so young needs to know about it this soon either. I immediately returned it.

Brilliant for explaining death to a child in a sweet way
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on February 24, 2021Verified Purchase
Absolutely fantastic. My dad recently passed and this has really helped explain things to my 6 year old nephew.
The 15th edition version DOES mention a little on death at the end of the book where as previous editions don't.
I hope the pictures helps others to see how great this book is for explaining the most horrific things in a sweet way to our children.

Lovely book - check the publication date for full original version

Lovely book about loving someone no matter what. Bough for my son as it touches a little on death very lightly and as he’s been piecing a few things together at this age (nearly 5) I wanted to reassure him a little if he was a bit concerned. Thank you to those who mentioned that the most recent versions do not have the final line about the stars. And this really is what makes the book complete. I searched for a copy of the original publication and it was very much worth it. Such a heartwarming tale. My son went a little quiet at the end then said ‘that’s a lovely book’ and gave me a big hug.

We love this book. This is the original version with the original ending "what about when we're dead and gone, will you love me then, does love go on" rather than the new version about when we're asleep or far away. It took forever to arrive but I specifically wanted the original version so was happy to wait for it. We read this before bed every night along with Guess How Much. I love that the message is that it doesn't matter if you are grumpy and throwing a tantrum or if you turn into a bug or if you are far away, your grown up will always love you no matter what. I also love that the grown up isn't called Mummy or Daddy so is good for all families whatever the set up.its become a tradition with both my little monkeys and one I intend to continue for a long time.
