The Cornell course that goes with this book is online and highly recommended. Strogatz is an amazing teacher and it helps a lot to see his ideas emerge in clicking chalk and responses to student's questions.

On the other hand, all this will be totally unintelligible for anyone who lacks a solid background in math, including algebra, calculus and complex variables. I have an honours degree in Math and was able to keep up with the course having absorbed all four years of an advanced university-level course.

I purchased this at the same time that i purchased Jordan & Smith's Nonlinear Ordinary Differential Equations. In comparison, I found that whilst they don't cover exactly the same material, where they do overlap, Strogatz's book was better structured, had clearer explanations and fewer errors. There is also a series of Youtube videos of lectures given by Strogatz which covers some of the material in this book. if you have the option or you can only afford one, my recommendation would be to go with Strogatz's book.
