OUTCRY: URGENT ALARMS FROM OUR PLANET AND WHAT WE CAN DO ABOUT THEM Kindle Edition

As the title suggests, this book is all about what Mother Nature is trying to tell us regarding how our civilization is rapidly destroying that biosphere. Her OUTCRY is abundantly evident in phenomena like declining insect, bird and fish populations, rising global temperatures, storms, fires, melting ice at the poles, and dead zones in the oceans; to name just a few.
The title also suggests an OUTCRY from nine "big picture" scientists who have connected the dots between human behavior and the deterioration of nature's ability to keep us alive. On the front cover, the highly acclaimed filmmaker and environmentalist, James Cameron, sums up our dilemma in stark terms and asks the question that we strive to answer in this book:
“The world is completely delusional and going to hell in a handbasket as fast as humanly possible. The only relevant question is: How do we make the crash as soft a landing as possible for some kind of continuation of human civilization?”
Mother Nature weighs in and has her say in the Foreword—a harsh message regarding our responsibility to correct the massive damage we have inflicted on the biosphere in just the past few hundred years—a mere blink of the eye in geologic time. She begins:
"This message is addressed to the billions of citizens who reside in the developed nations of planet Earth. You may wonder why I am not sending this message to all humans who live here. It’s because you in the developed world are the ones who have done most of the disruption of my efforts to sustain you—while the remaining three or four billion people have done most of the suffering as a result of your reckless behavior.”
Following the “OUTCRY” from nature and the nine scientists in Part One, most of the book is aimed at what we can do about re-inventing our living arrangements enough to slow, stop or reverse the damage we have already done. In other words, what can be done—soon enough—to prevent the extinction of Homo sapiens? Some scientists have suggested that we must give half of the planet back to nature in order to survive. The problem is that there is no global conversation regarding a plan for how we might do that.
Throughout the book, we describe an envisioned, highly-efficient, futuristic, luxurious and ultra-sustainable, coast-to-coast living corridor that could be developed in the USA and thus serve as a model for the rest of the world. How we might be able to turn that vision into reality before 2030 is our primary focus. The crucial question as we develop that model is "How green is green enough?" Since we can never be sure of the answer, we must totally re-design every aspect of our civilization—erring on the side of doing more than Mother Nature demands.
Accepting defeat is not an option—as we simply cannot let our children down. Hopefully, this book will provide readers with some of the knowledge and inspiration needed—along with how each person can make a difference—in helping to spark the crucial global conversation about a complete reinvention of our civilization. If we do this right, we are confident that Mother Nature will be delighted to see us survive and thrive indefinitely on this very special planet.

About the author

Engineer, process improvement consultant and career business executive—Jim Hicks has always focused on the “big picture” when analyzing any issue. In 2002, after becoming curious about the “optimal diet” for humans, he began a comprehensive study of what we eat from a global perspective—discovering many startling issues and opportunities along the way.
By far, the most troublesome issue—and opportunity—pertain to the grossly unsustainable way we are living in the highly industrialized nations of the world— and what that means to the long-term future of Homo sapiens on this planet.
A little background—in 2004, Jim began referring to our food choices as the most important issue in the history of humanity—having concluded that our future as a species was riding on those choices. Ten years later, he realized that in order to preserve the fragile ecosystem that sustains us, we must also urgently address many other unsustainable aspects of humanity that now threaten our long-term survival as a species—climate change drivers like overpopulation, burning of fossil fuels and never-ending economic growth in a world of finite resources.
In recent years, he has devised an uplifting way of writing and speaking about all of those troubling issues—by envisioning how we might totally re-invent the way we live on this planet, such that we can co-exist indefinitely in a virtual paradise with nature. He documents that process in his third book, OUTCRY, Urgent Alarms from Our Planet and What We Can Do About Them—published as an e-book only (for the planet) in April of 2020—on the 50th anniversary of Earth Day.
Jim holds a BS in Industrial Engineering from Auburn University and an MBA from the University of Hawaii, a degree he earned while serving as an officer in the U.S. Coast Guard in Honolulu. Also, since 2011—in addition to his three books, he has posted over 1200 sustainability articles at hpjmh.com. To be sure, the new vision and overall message in his latest book, have become major elements of his never-ending mission to promote health, hope and harmony on planet Earth.

So guess what? Even though the impending climate disaster doesn't have the compressed timeline of the current pandemic, we should heed the lesson that scientists need to be listened to—especially those scientists who've been warning us about the risks of climate change for decades. This book offers a serious solution to the challenge of living sustainably while living happily!
We are currently in an "all hands on deck" situation. Read this book ASAP—it contains an action plan that just might keep our mothership afloat.

The question Mother Nature poses to all of us is: how much longer do we wish to reside here?
If our answer is "sustainably forever", then we need to take meaningful actions very soon to reinvent our civilizations globally, and move to a brand new collective lifestyle that aligns closely with the ecological requirements of Earth.
Can we humans, with all of our incredibly diverse cultures across the planet, accomplish this change within our current governmental frameworks and attitudes? The answer presented by the book Outcry is clearly NO. Instead, we need to implement a totally new, sustainable, high tech way of life rather than just modifying our current lifestyles to "lean" in the direction of sustainability.
Do we need to cede our current position of privileged dominance of this planet to cyborgs who will then point the way to a more intelligent and harmonious way of living? PERHAPS, especially if we remain unwilling to sublimate our petulant human tendencies to the greater good of the planet.
Will this goal require fundamental lifestyle changes, including moving fully to whole food plant-based nutrition worldwide? YES, but we will be led by such prescient young leaders as Greta Thunberg and others, who will act as our collective moral compass and inspire all of us to make the necessary sacrifices. To paraphrase her from a 2019 talk at the World Economic Forum: "Our house is on fire, but we can turn this around while there still is time".
Our carbon budget remaining available to stem a full climate breakdown is getting smaller every day, so now is the time to act.
