4.0 out of 5 stars Great demonstration of where next generation affordable VR is heading with rooms for improvement.
By nightlord on July 6, 2018
I am a general VR enthusiast and an active gamer who has been looking for new ways to play games beyond home game consoles. Previous to this purchase, I tried: Vive, Gear VR, PSVR. I understand Vive, PSVR are in different leagues based on price and I will be reviewing fairly.

Packaging: Comes in a very sturdy hard box with simple contents - VR headset, remote control, glass spacer, battery, etc. It feels good when you open the package and does feel like you're getting what you're paying for. No complaint here as it was a smooth experience. This is where it might confuse some people and it initially did to me too. There is no instruction included such as quick start page. The package instructs you to connect to phone but doesn't indicate that that's where instructions are to be followed. The way to accomplish this is by connecting your phone to the VR headset and from there you follow your phone instructions to set things up. If you're not familiar with technology or not used to using your phone, you might not be aware of a trend of minimalism in tech and video games where every instruction is included digitally going forth.

a) comfort: matte finish and has an adjustable strap that can fit very big heads like mine, but that is not the fundamental challenge unfortunately. I have a relatively large and a square-ish round head and this device is more suited towards oval headshapes. I noticed that the device is heavier than I expected and not too sure if this is good for long time usage. It does get heavier with glass spacer as center of weight is towards the end of the headset.

b) Eyesight: There is a glass spacer that you can install to give more space for glasses but it was still very stiff with little space for width of my glasses. Gear VR for example allows you to adjust focus that I could play without glasses but Oculus Go requires wearing glasses or order prescription glasses. In the long run, the way Gear VR does by just using your cellphone or allowing focus adjustments is far more convenient than fixed focus and making you order prescription glasses because now this requires me to go see the eye doctor and find out my subscription and ordering prescription glasses online was never a pleasant experience for me. When you put in a glass spacer, there is a large space that's made between your nose and the headset that light will leak unless you really tighten your strap.

c) Visual quality: Now let's talk about good parts. They finally done it. First gen VRs had relatively low resolutions and you could see tiles in your display (seeing images consisting of dots). Oculus go makes it a jump from iPhone 3 to iPhone 4 retina display level. Pixels are hard to recognize and images are a lot clearer, fonts are not pixel-y and feels like seeing a smooth display. However, that doesn't necessarily mean it's going to look crisp and super clear as when you watch videos you can still see that it is kind of blurry in most cases even when you downloaded original file (when you use apps or watch videos, some videos offer you to download the original size file for higher quality video than streaming).

d) dizziness: A word of caution if you felt dizziness when using VR in certain scenes such as moving scenes in first person view, I tried Jurassic World Blue and it still gave me dizziness so if you don't feel dizziness that's fine but if you felt dizziness in different headsets and want to try Oculus go on those situations that gave you dizziness before, it won't change for Oculus go.

e) remote control: Some cool stuff that got added is this new wireless remote control that has touch control and you just need to pop in AA battery that comes with the package. It is a great addition compared to when I had to control things using my headset on Gear VR.

f) overheating: I found it uncomfortable that the headset was overheating uncomfortably when you touch the front of the headset while watching a clip. It is a standalone headset so all processing is happening inside I understand, but having something overheat in front of my eyes is not too comfortable.

Verdict:
If I could give 3.5 stars, that's what this product will get because it is not the best but have potential to be the best. Purchase it if you never tried VR before and want to know where the future is heading, but I would wait for the 2nd gen if you're not in rush. If you don't wear glasses, then it could be a great experience for you but it still doesn't resolve the weight, battery, and overheating. iPad 1 was super heavy and bulky initially and iPad 2 got a lot lighter with more performance. Oculus Go 1st gen is a great device that experiments with a lot of new cool features and specs that is suggesting this is how consumer VR headsets will be like going forth but seems to be still more suitable for early tech adapters based on various inefficiencies and discomfort I discovered from using it as I believe all cons I mentioned can definitely be solved on 2nd gen including making it more light, longer battery life, and figure out how to adjust focus to allow glasses users to use without glasses. However, Oculus go does shine a positive light on the future of affordable VR and I can't wait to see how much VR will be reliable and realistic in 4-6 years.

5.0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 3, 2019
I had played on a friend Oculus Rift when they first came out and was instantly blown away. Being a Mac user, however, it's never been an option for me. I've also always wanted my parents to experience VR too, I was delighted to see that the Oculus Go had been released as a standalone (though requiring a phone / tablet).

So, Xmas came and the Oculus Go popped up and I bought my Mother one. Again, I was blown away just as I was before and the multiplayer aspect dawned on me.....so I bought myself one. I'm now connecting with my Mother (me in my house and her at her house) and we connect in a virtual room to play games. That's only what we've done so far. I have a lot more planned.

The VR headset is of a reasonable build. Surprisingly light - especially when you consider the processor and all the 'innards' are inside this. Which brings me onto one point which was a downside. On my second 'experience' the unit was hot at the front (which I suspect to be a heatsink of itself) and I got a warning and advice to power down. This happened after only 30 mins use. Researching, this didn't appear to be common problem, so I was both relieved but worried for my individual unit. Thankfully, I haven't had the problem since, though heat is still present - which is expected.

Back into the positives and focus on the main points - It DOES feel like you are in the experience. The resolution isn't as great quality as 4K by any means, but it's more than good enough, especially for rapid play action games.

Games are plenty and the library is building steadily by developers. I downloaded the 10 pack of games on a Xmas Special price of £29.99 and Ive been absorbed within 3 of them so far, with the rest still to explore.

This review will be updated.
