From debut author Elle Grawl comes a psychological thriller about an insomniac artist who discovers a shocking truth about a recent spate of murders in her city: the victims all look just like her.
Years after escaping her abusive childhood, Harper Mallen has only ever known sleepless nights—or terrifying nightmares. She’s struggling to survive as an artist in a trendy Chicago neighborhood, getting by on freelance gigs, when she’s suddenly confronted with the worst fears from her past.
A young woman is killed outside Harper’s apartment—a woman who chillingly resembles her. As Harper searches for information about the victim, she discovers unsettling links to two other murders. Upon discovering another doppelgänger, Harper realizes her life is not the only one hanging in the balance.
As her obsession and paranoia deepen, everyone is a suspect: the handsome stranger in the café, customers at the painting studio, even the ghosts from her past. The closer she comes to unraveling the truth behind the murders, the more Harper realizes there is no one she can trust—not even herself.

Product description
From the Publisher
In this haunting debut thriller, artist—and insomniac—Harper Mallen has been haunted by the memories of her identical twin and the traumatic accident that took her life years ago. Her face is inescapable in the mirror, in her dreams.
When a young woman is killed outside her apartment—a young woman who resembles Harper and her dead sister—it feels like her worst nightmare happening all over again.
Harper’s twisted story is a fast-paced and compelling page-turner that had me in knots trying to figure out what was real and what was a dreamscape. It left me hoping I meet my own doppelgänger under better circumstances...

My only real complaint was the ending didn't quite feel like an ending. With what has taken place there was an opening for more. So less concrete than I would have liked but a great story overall.
Will definitely read more from this author in the future.

Harper seems to have a problem as she has one of those faces that are quite familiar, and thus looks like some other women, which leads to confusion from a distance, and as here, she seems to have the same features as women who get killed in the city. This however is not a straight serial killer tale, and Harper is an illustrator and not on the police. So, what makes this stand out I hear you think. The reason is because this is rather ambiguous, thus making something a bit meatier and more interesting than the same old thing.
We read of our main character’s traumatic upbringing, and what happened to her sister, and we can see that this still affects her, what with bad dreams about her, and also others. With similar featured women to her winding up dead, who is behind it, and with the lapses in memory, the nightmares and so on, could Harper be the killer of some if not everyone who is affected in this tale? There could be other people involved, but we are given something of a wild goose chase here, as our main character hopes that she is not going to end up another dead victim. And to add another element this takes in alcohol and prescription drug addiction.
Well enough written, even by the end of this you cannot claim that you have the definitive answer to everything that has happened, which adds to the appeal and the hold that the story has over you, and shows a certain masterfulness in the design and construction of this. At the end of the day, once you have finished this you will certainly remember this book, and it is to be hoped that some kind of film treatment will be made of this, although I would suspect a tv serial would be more effective than a movie of this novel.
