An empowering journey that keeps great teachers in the classroom
The Onward Workbook is a collection of tools and strategies that help teachers banish the burnout and cultivate true resilience. Keyed to the framework presented in Onward, this companion piece augments the text with practical exercises, coaching, and step-by-step walkthroughs of beneficial practices. Deep introspection allows you to verbalize your feelings, name your challenges, and identify the tools you have and the tools you need—from there, you’ll explore each of the 12 Key Habits and learn how to put them into practice every day.
In cultivating resilience within yourself and your teaching practice, you improve your health, your outlook, and your relationships while building an environment in which every child succeeds. This workbook takes you on a journey of specific self-discovery that changes your perspective, renews your confidence, and empowers you to make the much-needed changes that allow you to continue inspiring young minds.
- Dig deeper within to discover what you’re truly made of
- Decode complex emotions, body language, and nonverbal communications
- Challenge your beliefs, build community, and navigate difficult interactions
- Learn more, feel more, play more, and practice effective self-care
Resiliency is an underrated skill—one that can make all the difference in our schools. Challenges will always arise, but it is your response that dictates the outcome. Can you think of a more important lesson for your students? When some 70 percent of teachers quit within their first five years, it is clear that changes must be made. The Onward Workbook equips you to make the changes that you can, and flourish into the future.
While this book can be used by individuals, it is also designed so that groups, teams, departments, or an entire staff can take up the learning together. There are specific suggestions in the workbook for using this with a group, and educators will reap even more reward from discussing the practices and experiences with colleagues.

Well written, the author uses supportive language for reflection & self-improvement. Dotted around are short passages to reflect on & relevant quotes to ponder over. There is even a recipe for ‘The Best Homemade Chai’, (last image below refers), originally by writer Elizabeth Gilbert, since modified with encouragement to tweak ‘until it tastes just as you like!’

It is a weighty paperback tome that measures around 21.5 cm x 27.27 cm x 3 cm.
The current ‘Look Inside’ facility above gives a good insight into what lies between the covers, simply presented in BLACK & shades of GREY, on crisp WHITE pages…650 of them!
The back cover summarises the aims of this publication (copied below for reference).
IMO, it is useful as a standalone book and I can link it to other publications I am currently reading as part of my new course. I find it easy to dip in & out of when time permits.
The approach may not appeal to everyone, but it has helped me generally see & think things differently, e.g.
From page 107:
📝 ‘Thanking Your Emotions:
Complete the following statements:
‘Thank you, sadness. You’ve help me understand…’
…then, in the same format for…
~ Fear
~ Anger
~ Disgust
~ Shame
~ Envy
~ Happiness
~ Love
The author uses her white space to start hers as:
~ ‘Thank you, sadness. You’ve helped me understand that your pain is tied to my joy. Sadness arises because of loss, and you help me see that I need to feel joy and connection.
~ Thank you, fear. You’ve helped me recognise how I can stay safe in this world. You have given yourself to protecting me….’
The next exercise expands on this.
Each chapter has activities to do each day for the month and opens with a double-page spread that includes a relevant quote for the month ahead, e.g.
📝 CHAPTER 5 : ‘Be Here Now’
‘OCTOBER: As we approach the fall, our energy wanes and we’re triggered more easily. Learning to be in the present moment enables us to cultivate awareness of our emotions and make choices that foster our resilience.’
The activities are generally designed for self-reflection in a busy modern world, with a variety of writing and drawing activities, answering questions & mind mapping. ‘Best Times’ to indulge in an activity are indicated by an icon:
~ An activity for morning
~ An activity for evening
~ An activity for when you have a little time and perhaps a reflective, relaxing space to sit
Some activities are well-known, such as ‘MBTI’ (Myers–Briggs Type Indicator) or ‘The Raisin Meditation’; others less so.
Some require additional resources such as referred websites for e.g. colouring in templates or recommended books, but these can be skipped if preferred.
Each chapter closes with ‘Chapter Reflection’, with the same four questions to ask yourself:
1. What were your biggest takeaways from this chapter?
2. Of the different activities in this chapter, which were most useful?
3. Which activities would you like to revisit periodically? How might you get that habit going?
4. What implications do the ideas in this chapter have for the work you do?

Resilience is a quality that we all need in life, and in the education sphere especially so, this book is aimed at this one factor - to develop your own resilience and empower you to work on it whatever you are facing.
As you work through this book, not only will you strengthen yourself to face your day, but you will also enhance your own teaching skills with many points that have universal application and you will end up helping yourself first and then also those you serve too!
On first reading, I thought this was a strong four stars, but actually it is better than that, and deserves the full five!

The starting point is looking at yourself and then understanding the emotions. You are then guided into the power of story-telling and in how to build a community around you. These are the foundations. Then it looks at the particulars of what is happening now in your life and how you need to take care of yourself and look at the positives. There is a chapter on Compassion which has been under-rated before and which is becoming more widely recognised as essential. Finally it looks at the future and how you can be a learner, how you can be creative and how you can participate in change. Finally it brings it all together to celebrate what it is to be you.
I think that this is an excellent resource that gives you a scaffold for reflecting about where you are and where you want to go. There is a lot here (nearly 650 pages) but most of it is going to be written by you.
