PRACTICAL EXERCISES AND ACTIVITIES FOR BECOMING A RESILIENT EDUCATOR

This hands-on workbook is the companion to Elena Aguilar's extraordinary book Onward. It explores in-depth the 12 habits that are essential for building and developing resilience in educators. The Onward Workbook is the must-have resource for cultivating resilience, filled with over 365 exercises that draw on the author's extensive research in emotional resilience, psychology, systems thinking, change management, and on her 12 years of coaching educators.

The Onward Workbook is your personal resource for cultivating resilience and becoming the educator of your dreams. The workbook has a variety of empowering stories and activities that introduce each of the 12 habits as well as activities that offer a guide to reflect on the habits explored. The exercises offer a better understanding of Onward's four-part conceptual framework that rests on the key components of resilience and how it is developed.

The exercises described are tried and tested and have proven to boost educator abilities to build community, become more mindful, take better care of themselves, focus on the positive, cultivate compassion, become ongoing learners, develop creativity, accept change, celebrate gratitude, and much more.

…but it is surprisingly easy to digest and has plenty of space for writing or sketching your thoughts and/or findings, so a complete record is always to hand under one cover (rather than in a separate notebook).

Well written, the author uses supportive language for reflection & self-improvement. Dotted around are short passages to reflect on & relevant quotes to ponder over. There is even a recipe for ‘The Best Homemade Chai’, (last image below refers), originally by writer Elizabeth Gilbert, since modified with encouragement to tweak ‘until it tastes just as you like!’

✤ TITLE : THE ONWARD WORKBOOK: DAILY ACTIVITIES TO CULTIVATE YOUR EMOTIONAL RESILIENCE AND THRIVE
✤ AUTHOR : ELENA AGUILAR

ooOoo

It is a weighty paperback tome that measures around 21.5 cm x 27.27 cm x 3 cm.
The current ‘Look Inside’ facility above gives a good insight into what lies between the covers, simply presented in BLACK & shades of GREY, on crisp WHITE pages…650 of them!
The back cover summarises the aims of this publication (copied below for reference).

IMO, it is useful as a standalone book and I can link it to other publications I am currently reading as part of my new course. I find it easy to dip in & out of when time permits.
The approach may not appeal to everyone, but it has helped me generally see & think things differently, e.g.

From page 107:

📝 ‘Thanking Your Emotions:

Complete the following statements:

‘Thank you, sadness. You’ve help me understand…’

…then, in the same format for…

~ Fear
~ Anger
~ Disgust
~ Shame
~ Envy
~ Happiness
~ Love

The author uses her white space to start hers as:

~ ‘Thank you, sadness. You’ve helped me understand that your pain is tied to my joy. Sadness arises because of loss, and you help me see that I need to feel joy and connection.
~ Thank you, fear. You’ve helped me recognise how I can stay safe in this world. You have given yourself to protecting me….’

The next exercise expands on this.

Each chapter has activities to do each day for the month and opens with a double-page spread that includes a relevant quote for the month ahead, e.g.

📝 CHAPTER 5 : ‘Be Here Now’

‘OCTOBER: As we approach the fall, our energy wanes and we’re triggered more easily. Learning to be in the present moment enables us to cultivate awareness of our emotions and make choices that foster our resilience.’

The activities are generally designed for self-reflection in a busy modern world, with a variety of writing and drawing activities, answering questions & mind mapping. ‘Best Times’ to indulge in an activity are indicated by an icon:

~ An activity for morning
~ An activity for evening
~ An activity for when you have a little time and perhaps a reflective, relaxing space to sit

Some activities are well-known, such as ‘MBTI’ (Myers–Briggs Type Indicator) or ‘The Raisin Meditation’; others less so.
Some require additional resources such as referred websites for e.g. colouring in templates or recommended books, but these can be skipped if preferred.

Each chapter closes with ‘Chapter Reflection’, with the same four questions to ask yourself:

1. What were your biggest takeaways from this chapter?
2. Of the different activities in this chapter, which were most useful?
3. Which activities would you like to revisit periodically? How might you get that habit going?
4. What implications do the ideas in this chapter have for the work you do?
