5.0 out of 5 stars A Journey to the Magical World of Fairy Tales
Reviewed in the United States πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ on January 11, 2021
Fairy tales are always an invitation to a world of magic and wonder ,where animals talk like humans and ordinary human beings exhibit extraordinary powers and abilities. Andrew Lang's The Orange Fairy Book is no different. First published in 1906, this current edition has been revised and updated for the modern reader. The one thing that makes this book different from other fairy tales collections is its cultural diversity beyond the usual western-centric fare. The stories here are taken from many countries and are originally in many languages: French, Italian, Spanish, Catalan, Gaelic, Icelandic, Cherokee, African, Indian, Australian, Slavic, Eskimo, etc. There are many recurrent narrative motifs: the journey of the hero toward wisdom, the tests of a hero's moral character and physical character, the struggle between good and evil, between overwhelming odds and cunning, etc. The descriptions are usually hyperbolic, out of this world, and the incidents are no less unbelievable and extraordinary. Therein lies their magic and attraction. The Story of the King Who Would See Paradise. The Story of the Hero Makono, How Isuro the Rabbit Tricked Guido. The Adventures of a Jackal. And at the end of each story hides a moral lesson: about the virtue of patience, the rewards of kindness and good deed.
