To Remove a Ball Joint

Assemble the Ball Joint Press over the vehicle's control arm. Select the correct size Receiving Tube, and position it under the vehicle's ball joint.
Place the Removal Adapter between the Receiving Tube and the Jackscrew.
Then, place the Installation Adapter between the top of the ball joint and the Ball Joint Press.
Tighten the Jackscrew until the Receiving Tube contacts the vehicle's control arm.
Check the alignment of all the Ball Joint Kit parts, and continue tightening the Jackscrew until the vehicle's ball joint is removed.


To Install a Ball Joint Clean the vehicle's control arm, and coat the inside diameter of the control arm with a light lubricant. Insert the replacement ball joint as straight as possible into the vehicle's control arm. Assemble the Ball Joint Press over the vehicle's control arm. Select the correct size Receiving Tube and position it on top of the vehicle's control arm. Place the Installation Adapter between the Receiving Tube and the Ball Joint Press. Then, place the Removal Adapter between the ball joint and the Jackscrew. Check the alignment of all the Ball Joint Kit parts. Then, tighten the Jackscrew until the vehicle's ball joint is firmly sealed.	To Remove/ Install Anchor Pins To remove the brake anchor pins, remove all lock ring retainers from the Brake Anchor Pins. Position the Ball Joint Press over the brake spider. Tighten the Jackscrew until the anchor pins can be removed. To install the brake anchor pins, insert the brake anchor pins. Then reinstall the lock ring retainers on the brake anchor pin. Unscrew and remove the Ball Joint Press.	To Dis/ Assemble a "U" Joint To disassemble a "U" joint, remove any external and/or internal lock rings. Position the Ball Joint Press around the drive shaft yoke and tighten the Jackscrew until the first bearing is removed. Reposition the Ball Joint Press and remove the second bearing. To assemble a "U" joint, clean all dirt and oil from the yoke area. Align the replacement bearing and Ball Joint Press as straight as possible over the yoke. Press the replacement bearing into the yoke, and reassemble the external/internal lock ring. Reposition the Ball Joint Press and second replacement bearing as straight as possible over the yoke, and press the bearing into the yoke. Reassemble the external/internal lock ring.

Bent on the very first ball joint I tried it on. 2006 F150. The ball joint was already moving when I started using it and it still bent. Trying to get the new one in with it bent open 20 degrees wasn't fun. I went to Napa and bought a proper one for the other side. Goes to show, buy cheap, buy twice.

For $80 it's a very solid press. The finishes are a little rough around the edges, the paint isn't particularly durable, but hey; it's a tool, and one that'll be covered in dirt and automotive grease in no-time.

Says not to use with an impact wrench, but keep the threads well-greased and you shouldn't have a problem. I probably wouldn't try to use this with a super high-torque impact, but I had great success using it with an 18V mid-torque impact wrench.

I do wish it came with a greater variety of cups and adapters, but I made it work. I guess that's what the larger set is for...

Rings are either too big or too small or too shallow. After some straggle switched back to hammering it out.
Tried to use it to press new ball join in - but same deal - one ring is right on the edge of the joint body, another it too small, next one too big. Again just hammered it in side to side old school.
And the press itself its not wide enough - hardly grabs the thread edge.
Anywho, I think it should be at least an inch wider and have more rings options.

First, it does not comes with the right cup and fitting to fit the Ram 3500.
Second, the thread are too loose, so it does not hold a straight line when under pressure.
Third, the G-Clamp itself flexes under pressure.

We stop using it, this tool is not strong enough to do the job. Things can fly off under high stress like in this situation when all parts no line-up in a straight line. Someone can get hurt.

Thank goodness another mechanic have a different set from another vendor to finish the job.

The manual that comes with this specifies what cars it's designed for. The newest year of the Honda Accord that was listed within was quite old. My 2014 Accord therefor as it turns out was not designed for it, and I confirmed that it doesn't work as designed to remove/install a ball joint. However I did manage to make it work for installing the ball joint on my ninth gen Accord, so I'm mostly happy with it. I do wish that the pages that list what specific vehicles it's designed to work with were included on the item listing.

I first ordered the Astro set expecting a better quality product as it was about twice the price and comparing pictures with other sets it seemed to have a better finish. To my dismay it arrived and the clamp seemed poorly machined with sloppy threads and the finish was not like in the pictures, but looked just like the less expensive sets. I re-boxed it and returned it within the hour. I re-ordered the OMT set at half the price and it looked as if it was made in the same place as the Astro set but without the clamp machining problems (although it to had a few minor quality issues with the Adapters (a couple of painted over rust bubbles and a dented edge that I was able to un-dent). My feeling in the end is that the sets were probably identical (OMT's plastic carrying case was different and a little better) and you are simply at the mercy of poor factory quality control, so do not necessarily expect better quality just because you are paying more. While I have yet to use my OMT set I am happy with the apparent quality and sure it will work just fine.

Past experience with higher end brands of this same style of tool made me remove components that turned and coat them with a heavy grease right away to keep wear down. Inside the threaded screw is a ball bearing to reduce friction when under a load. I coated this ball as well. After removing one suspension bushing I pulled the ball out and had a look. Heavily grooved already. This suggests to me the materials used are quite soft. All this being said however it did perform the task and I like the variety of spacers and cups that are included. For the price and home use only it will probably last a while

Just received mine and although I haven’t use it yet, a couple of things are worth mentioning.

1- for some reason the jackscrew came screwed upside down. It also came with no lubricant/oil and with quite a bit of dirt/particles within the treads.
2- the manual states that the you should consult the models for which the kit can be used before buying. Not sure how you can read the manual before buying the kit, but whatever.
3- right after this, the manual presents a list of vehicles for which this kit can be used. It also states that the list is not comprehensive. So you need to consult the manual but the manual isn’t comprehensive.
4- be aware that this thing cannot be used with an impact wrench.
5- some vehicles are listed as “remove” but not “install”. Not sure how this works, but maybe someone might be able to get the ball joint out but not install a new one. My Jeep Liberty is listed as such.

Once I have used it to replace I will update this review.

Bought this to do the upper and lower ball joints on my E150. The first thing I noticed when opening the case was the sticker on the inside that says "Attention: DO NOT USE IMPACT WRENCH." That tells you right off it is not a profession grade tool despite the too'ls heft. Honestly though, who is going to install ball joints using a rachet when they have an impact wrench available?

Second thing I noticed was the shaft didn't thread easily. Do yourself a favor and put some oil or light grease on the threads.

Despite the warnings I used my air impact wrench and the tool no problems pressing out the existing, 20 year old OEM ball joints!

Fitting the new joints was a problem though. The top joints went in fine once everything was lined up. Unfortunately none of the cups fit the bottom joints which made it difficult to line up the tool straight. I chose a cup that was a bit small and the installation force flared end the cup! I also noticed some deflection in the base of one of the caps used.

But it worked for the removal and installation, it survived my 3/4" impact wrench, the case seems sturdy, and the price is right. Three stars, four if the cup had fitted and not flared.

I bought this ball joint service kit to replace the ball joints on my 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 4WD (I did the job in February 2018). The c-frame is a beast and I was pretty confident it would easily do the job. Once I got it on the truck, I was slightly less confident. Those ball joints are definitely in there. The kit is NOT a perfect fit for this exact application, it will be off-alignment at times. For me, the best results were had when I removed the lower ball joint first, an impact wrench makes it quite a bit easier and I think it is more effective at breaking the ball joint loose. Removing the upper ball joint required more creativity. It could not be done the "normal" way because the removal adapter is way too big in diameter to clear the inside of the axle and the curvature of the yoke-ear (i.e. it does not fit). Instead I had to run it "backwards" and put the screw onto the shaft of the ball joint, but that can only be done by passing the screw through the hole in the axle yoke of the lower ball-joint. I did the first upper ball joint with a large ratchet and it ended up pressing the shaft (king-pin) right up through the top of the joint assembly. In other words the force blew the shaft right through to the top of the ball joint (the upper ball joint on the '04 2500 is not actually a ball joint, it's a king pin). The shaft was removed at this point, but the ball joint body was still 100% installed in the axle (not good). This presented me with a new problem as the kit had no adapter I could use to press the upper ball joint out at this point. But I had a large metric socket that was shallow (i.e. not a deep socket) and it's diameter fit the ball joint perfectly, I was able to improvise and since the shaft of the ball joint was gone I was now able to use the socket as the removal adapter and press the ball joint body out of the axle (yay). For my second attempt on the other upper ball joint, I used the impact wrench and the job went a LOT smoother. The shaft of the joint did not explode through the top of the ball joint body, it did deform quit a bit, but the body of the ball joint released from the axle before the top of the body failed. The impact wrench made a big difference in my case.

Installing the new joints went a LOT better than the removal. Again, I'll point out that for my exact application I had to carefully press the ball joints into the axle while the press was not square. It requires a little patience. To ensure I did not get the new joints wedged in a bad way, I had to press them in a little bit, check them, and realign the press as necessary so it would apply more force on a particular side to straighten it out. Once the ball joint was in deep enough this wasn't a problem, but the initial insertion required patience. This is because the kit does not have any adapters that align perfectly to this job.

For those of you with the same generation Dodge Ram 2500, Cummins, live front axle, this kit will work, but it's not a perfect fit.

All in all, it worked. The tool absolutely held up to the job. Oh, one more thing, be sure you lubricate the press-screw liberally, otherwise you will probably start to encounter some galling and that could end up ruining the press and worse, leaving you stuck with job partially done. The lubrication makes the press work a LOT better. I used Permatex Anti-Sieze Compound, which worked great.

Bought to replace ball joints on my 99 Ford Ranger and decided to buy since I do a fair amount of work on my cars and I know my other car will be needing this repair soon as well. The fitting cylinders actually seemed to fit well on the removal side of my 99 Ford Ranger Lower Ball Joint - Everything aligned for the removal. Attached my socket to it, began first rotation, and SNAP. The bolt sheared off right at the ball joint spot. I maybe had pulled with 60 ft/lb. of pressure, hadn't even put any real muscle into it yet. I assume this is a manufacturing defect but COME ON, I bought this tool specifically for this job! I live about 30 minutes from town and I had to drive all the way in to rent a ball joint puller that worked. Used the rented one in the exact same way and it took out the ball joint just fine.

Unreliable, complete waste of time and money. Why are you even selling this on here? You will lose money on all the returns you get
