An instant New York Times bestseller A New York Times Notable Book of 2022 Named a Best Book of 2022 by People, TIME Magazine, The Washington Post, USA Today, NPR, Los Angeles Times, and Oprah Daily, and more A Reese's Book Club Pick
From the #1 bestselling author of Little Fires Everywhere, comes the inspiring new novel about a mother’s unbreakable love in a world consumed by fear.
“It’s impossible not to be moved.” —Stephen King, The New York Times Book Review
“Riveting, tender, and timely.” —People, Book of the Week
“Thought-provoking, heart-wrenching…I was so invested in the future of this mother and son, and I can’t wait to hear what you think of this deeply suspenseful story!” – Reese Witherspoon (Reese’s Book Club October ’22 Pick)
Twelve-year-old Bird Gardner lives a quiet existence with his loving but broken father, a former linguist who now shelves books in a university library. His mother Margaret, a Chinese American poet, left the family when he was nine years old without a trace. Bird knows to not ask too many questions, stand out too much, or stray too far. For a decade, his family's life has been governed by laws written to preserve “American culture” in the wake of years of economic instability and violence. To keep the peace and restore prosperity, the authorities are now allowed to relocate children of dissidents, especially those of Asian origin, and libraries have been forced to remove books seen as unpatriotic.
Bird has grown up disavowing his mother and her poems; he doesn’t know her work or what happened to her, and he knows he shouldn’t wonder. But when he receives a mysterious letter containing only a cryptic drawing, he is pulled into a quest to find her. His journey will take him back to the many folktales she poured into his head as a child, through the ranks of an underground network of librarians, into the lives of the children who have been taken, and finally to New York City, where a new act of defiance may be the beginning of much-needed change.
Our Missing Hearts is an old story made new, of the ways supposedly civilized communities can ignore the most searing injustice. It’s a story about the power—and limitations—of art to create change, the lessons and legacies we pass on to our children, and how any of us can survive a broken world with our hearts intact.

Scary to think this is not far from reality. When lives are stressful or disappointing, there is a tendency to find a scapegoat. While it does occur in the world, let’s hope our society has learned enough from past history to prevent this from becoming pervasive.

What a dradful concept. What a society. whether or not this is in the future, near or far, the concept is terrifying. The end of the book particularly riveted me. It certainly makes you think about the dreadful aspects of racism, and the consequences. Read this book, it takes a while to get into but it is a phenomenal read

Brought awareness to how society can fail it’s vulnerable people through an initially non threatening action.

Not my favourite writing style. Not a fan of dialogue in the style.
The start is slow, part 2 is great and part 3 a bit anticlimactic. Would give a four except for dialogue style.

This book is that rarest of reads....
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on October 22, 2022Verified Purchase
Our Missing Hearts is that rarest of reads: a novel I want to send all those I know and love, and want to leave on every bench and in every waiting room for unknown readers to devour. Celeste Ng's dystopian fable of the boy Bird and his Chinese American poet mother, forced apart in the xenophobic, repressive aftermath of financial and political Crisis, is an exquisite tale of terrifying times. It's a searing reminder of shameful, real life chapters of history when children were forcibly removed from home for supposed national stability. It's about parental sacrifice unsought and endured in anguish, or in the case of Bird's mother Margaret, a sacrifice chosen to protect her small family and champion so many more. An inspiring, bittersweet literary gem.

Starts well but loses momentum after part I

The first part of the book was very engaging. There were no unreliable narrators or unlikeable characters, which is a big plus. Unfortunately, the second half of the book was quite dull, despite dealing with very relevantissues. I would still recommend reading it, as it is a compelling, although rather depressing, story and well worth persevering with.

Beautiful, haunting, frightening.

After reading her last 2 books I knew that I had to preorder this and it has not disappointed. As someone who is half Chinese like bird I could not help but empathise with his longing for belonging, the feelings of otherness and it reminded me of the Asian hate felt during Covid 19. A very harrowing read but a beautiful tale of exploration of self , the importance of family, friendship and human connection and how quickly society can escalate into racial hatred and oppression like ww2 especially in times of hardship and economic crisis.

Great premise. Shocking but unfortunately conceivable given the right circumstances. Opening part movingly told re. Bird and Ethan’s relationship.
Next part: the relation of M’s story dull as mostly just ‘told’. Bird a lovely character feisty but gentle. A bit of his father and a bit of his mother. Sadie by her resilience defiance and courage is a character to admire and also her situation as a ‘removed’ child is so very very sad. The inferences of racism are shocking but sadly all too believable. As is people’s willingness to report on their neighbours.: Especially when people are put in a position where to be brave is dangerous. History has shown us that many times & still does today.

A wonderful, original story. The son’s voice resonates beautifully, and it takes its place alongside Brave New World and other distopian novels
