About the authors
Christopher Silas Neal is an award-winning author and illustrator of picture books including the Over and Under series with author Kate Messner, which was praised for its "stunning retro-style illustrations" (New York Times). He makes books that feature animals, shapes, science, friendship and silliness, and strives to create diverse and inclusive characters that reflect the kids and parents who read his books. Neal's author debut titled "Everyone" was praised by Publisher's Weekly as "simple, honest, lyrical". His board book series (Animals Colors, Animal Shapes) received starred reviews from Publisher's Weekly and Kirkus. He speaks about his books, the art making process, and his career at schools, conferences, libraries and book festivals across the country. Neal is a Mexican/Eurpoean-American artist who lives with his wife and two boys in Brooklyn, NY.
Kate Messner is passionately curious and writes books that encourage kids to wonder, too. Her titles include award-winning picture books like Over and Under the Rainforest, Up in the Garden and Down in the Dirt, The Next President, and How to Read a Story; novels that tackle real-world issues like Chirp, Breakout, All the Answers, and The Seventh Wish; high-interest nonfiction like Tracking Pythons and the History Smashers series; the Fergus and Zeke easy readers; and the popular Ranger in Time chapter books about a time-traveling search and rescue dog.
Kate’s titles are frequently selected for One School, One Book and One School/One Author programs and other community-wide reads. Her books have been New York Times Notable, Junior Library Guild, IndieBound, and Bank Street College of Education Best Books selections. Her novel The Brilliant Fall of Gianna Z. won the E.B. White Read Aloud Medal, and her science picture books have been finalists for the American Academy for the Advancement of Sciences/Subaru SB&F prize for excellence in science writing. In 2020, Kate was honored with New York’s Knickerbocker Award for creating a superior body of work supporting curriculum and educational goals.
Before becoming a full-time writer, Kate was a TV news reporter as well as a National Board Certified educator. She grew up in Medina, NY and graduated from Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School with a degree in Broadcast Journalism. Kate spent seven years working as a television news producer and reporter in Syracuse, NY and Burlington, VT before going back to school to earn a master’s degree in education for secondary-level English Language Arts. She taught middle school language arts for fifteen years before leaving the classroom to write full time but still spends much of her time in schools, working with kids as a visiting author.
Kate lives on Lake Champlain with her family and is trying to summit all 46 Adirondack High Peaks in between book deadlines. Learn more at her website: www.katemessner.com and follow her on Twitter @katemessner.

What I didn’t really enjoy was the overly flowery language that distracted from the imagery and the sort-of plot of a dad teaching his daughter about winter animals while they cross-country ski. I really did not need the people plot at all beyond a very background story about being out for a day of skiing and nature observing. I would have just liked more simple direct sentences about the scenery that just played background to the art. The art also really left a lot to be desired. It was flat and lifeless and some of the layout choices left me scratching my head. Also, some of the important details related to the text were very small and hard to find. Sometimes the art would feature a close up of an animal that would unnecessarily take up 3/4 of the page to the detriment of the page layout. I would have much rather had a continuous 50/50 balance on each page and better, more detailed art instead of relying on perspective shifts to add dynamism. The last thing that I did not enjoy about the book was that several times the “animal” above the snow featured was just the people doing there activities. I would have rather had more animals and then left the people to be featured as the above “animals” on the last above/below comparison. That would have been a nice wrap-up.
This book could have been so much more. But it fell so short compared to many other children’s books In this arena.
