5.0 out of 5 stars A fabulous guide to making high impact personal change without risking everything!

Everyone can benefit from this book. If you are interested in personal or professional growth, working to develop your capacity in a new domain, or simply trying to keep up with the change around you, let The Power of Flexing be your trusted guide! This book, written by the renowned researcher and educator, Professor Susan Ashford, lays out a step-by-step path to becoming a better you. Most of us want to think, feel or act differently at times – but making that change can be hard! The Power of Flexing unpacks the process of personal change, starting with a “learning mindset” that lowers the anxiety of trying something new, and embarking on a set of small, self-directed activities that allow you to experiment with behaving differently. This is the essence of flexing. As Ashford explains, when you support these experiments with feedback from others, self-reflection, and some emotion regulation, positive change has already begun! What distinguishes this book from the vast majority of self-help guides is its grounding in a wealth of social scientific research. But it is 100% readable and practical; I teach and coach executives and will be recommending it to all of them!

I got this book right when it came out, and I've hardly been able to put it down. The author's background as a researcher really comes through because it feels like all of the practical strategies and insights come from deep knowledge and all have evidence and stories to go along with it. I've read a lot of "personal development" type books, and this is the most in depth. It pulls from a lot of different areas and introduces many new concepts in order to create a new framework/strategy for taking on personal and team goals. This is a book I'll be returning to over and over again over the course of my career and life!

This book is packed full of useful tools that will guide you to becoming the “you” you want to be! It doesn’t matter if one is the CEO of a major company or the CEO of their household, we all have areas where we want to improve ourselves, and “The Power of Flexing” can help get you there by providing the tools (flex goals) and teaching you how to use them. This book is full of personal stories from all walks of life, not just corporate life which makes it very approachable. I haven’t marked up a book with underlining and notes since college, but this one made me want to do just that with passages that I found relevant and meaningful (spoiler: there were many!)
Highly recommend!!
