Not as Insipid as a Disney Fairytale

This is not a Cinderella retelling though the bare bones of this story sound like it. This is nothing so insipid as a Disney fairy tale. This is the story of a young minor noblewoman tossed willy nilly into the affairs of her betters and rising up to the challenge of diplomacy under severely adverse circumstances and in doing so, falling in love with a noble son far above her touch. Saffron certainly did not expect Julian to return her interest, but I can see that she and he are an excellent match. I applaud Elena for discerning that although I really don't think she can take credit for it.

I was surprised to get this a few days early, and I literally put it down for three times, for less than two minutes each. Saffron and Julian, with Jasper and others, take on a mission of danger and more mystery than they expected. The couple discover each other, Jasper discovers his own abilities, and everyone discovers forgotten people and abilities. A worthy companion novel to the Spoken Mage series. I look forward to reading the Hidden Mage series coming soon.

This book follows Julian and Saffron, side characters from the Spoken Mage series. Both are likeable and well written. The book continues on after the end of the original series and expands the world, definitely read before you get into the sequel Hidden Mage series.

I reread the first four books and thoroughly enjoyed them again, but sadly as soon as I started to read this final book I was disappointed. It only improved slightly by the time (and I stress "time" as it was much harder to read. Not a book I would recommend or desire to read a second time.

I so enjoyed the Spoken Mage books that I couldn't wait to read this one and it didn't disappoint. Great characters, interesting plot, a good clean read for anyone who enjoys fantasy, not just for young adults. The whole series (which you do really need to read in order) has been amazing and I loved the novel concept of magic via the written word and all the unexpected twists and cameos along the way. In this companion book, the characters are no longer at school and are finding their way in the world. I had already liked Saffron from the earlier books and loved how in this book, she stepped out of the shadow of her more outgoing cousin and friends and came to realise that being herself, and becoming the best she could be according to her talents, strengths and interests was not just 'enough' but was what was best for her family and clan too. I liked how Julian grew beyond the self-interested, 'play the politics' character he seemed to be and was able to see the worth of those less strong than himself and that the common born had value because they were people not just assets. All in all a great book and I can't wait until the next series in fact any book by Melanie Cellier won't disappoint!
